DIAGRAM THE WELLBORE

• Draw Diagram
• Necessary to Calculate Annular Volumes
• Draw and Label All Regions
• Region I:Casing Size (I.D.) , Drill Pipe O.D , Length
• Region II– Hole Size (Bit Ø) , Drill Pipe O.D , length
• Region III- Hole Size , Drill Collar, O.D, DC length
CALCULATION PROBLEM
CALCULATION PROBLEM
UNIVERSAL VOLUME FORMULAE
• A = Outer Cylinder Volume = 3.14159265 x (D1/2)²
• B = Inner Cylinder Volume = 3.14159265 x (D2/2)²
• C = Annulus Volume = A – B
• C = 0.7853981625 x (D1² – D2²) in²
• And for 1 FT which is equal to 12 in we get
• C = 12 x [ 0.7853981625 x (D1² – D2²) ) ] inᶟ
• C = 9.42477795 x (D1² – D2²) ) inᶟ
• 1 inᶟ = 0.00010307 bbl (see conversion tables)
• So C = 9.42477795 x 0.00010307 x (D1² – D2²) bbl/ft
= 0.00097141186 x (D1² – D2²) =(D1² – D2²) / 1029.42947392 bbl
Capacity = (D1² – D2²) / 1029.4 bbl/ft
UNIVERSAL VOLUME FORMULAE

• How we find 1 inᶟ = 0.00010307 bbl

• 1 in x 1in x 1in = 1 inᶟ or 1in=2.54 cm
• 1 inᶟ = 2.54 x 2.54 x 2.54 = 16.387064 cmᶟ 1cmᶟ =1ml
• We know that 1000 cmᶟ = 1 liter so 16.387064 cmᶟ = 0.016387064 liter
• We know that 158.9872949 liter = 1 bbl
so 0.016387064 liter = 0.00010307153 bbl
= 0.00010307 bbl
11
1inᶟ = 0.00010307 bbl
CALCULATING ANNULAR VOLUME
CALCULATING ANNULAR VOLUME

• Region II : Open Hole – Drill Pipe

• {(Bit Diameter² - Drill Pipe ID)²/1029.4} x Length

• VII = 9.875² - 5² x 11500 = 598.8 bbls

1029.4
ANNULAR VOLUME

• Region III:Open Hole(Bit Diameter) & Drill Collars(DC)

• Vol (bbls) = (Bit Diameter)² – (DC Diameter)² x Depth
1029.4
• Vol III = (9.875)² – (7.25)² X 1000 = 43.67 bbls
1029.4
CALCULATING ANNULAR VOLUME

ANNULAR VOLUME =

•Region I (Vol. in bbls) 229.87 bbls.

+
•Region II (vol. in bbls) 598.8 bbls.
+
•Region III (Vol. in bbls) 43.67 bbls.
= TOTAL ANNULAR VOLUME (CAPACITY)
= 872.34 bbls.
DRILL STRING VOLUME

• Region IV – Drill Pipe Volume

• Volume bbls = DP (ID)² / 1029.4 x Depth
• Volume IV = (4.276)² x11500 = 204.26 bbls
1029.4
DRILL STRING VOLUME
CALCULATING DRILL STRING VOLUME

• Region IV Drill Pipe Capacity (204.26 bbls)

+
• Region V Drill Collar Capacity (8.74 bbls)
= DRILL STRING CAPACITY (213 bbls)
CALCULATING SURFACE VOLUME

• CALCULATE TOTAL VOLUME PER TANK (PIT)

• MULTIPLE BY NUMBER OF TANKS/PITS
= TOTAL CAPACITY OF TANKS

• CALCULATE TOTAL VOLUME OF MUD/TANK

• MULTIPLY BY NUMBER OF TANKS
= MUD ON SURFACE
CALCULATING SURFACE VOLUME/CAPACITY

• Mud Tank Volume = Width x Length x Height

Width = 10ft x 12x2.54=304.8 cm
Length = 40ft x 12x2.54=1219.2 cm
Height = 8ft x 12x2.54=243.84 cm
Total Volume = 304.8 x 1219.2 x 243.84 = 90613909 cmᶟ
1000 cmᶟ = 1 liter so 90613909cmᶟ = 90613.909 liters
1000 liters = 6.28 bbl so 90613.9 liters = 569 bbls
All mud tanks volume = 569 x 3 = 1707 bbls if all full.
We have only 6 ft full with mud so we have:
(1707 / 8) x 6 = 1280 bbls as active volume.
