What is a Network Topology ?
A network topology is the physical and logical arrangement of nodes and
connections in a network.Nodes usually include devices such as switches, routers
and software with switch and router features
Types of Network Topologies
The most common types of network topologies include:
● Bus topology
● Star topology
● Ring topology
● Mesh topology
● Tree topology
● Hybrid topology
Bus Topology
Introduction
❖ Bus topology is a network setup where all devices are connected to a single
communication line called the bus.

Eg:Small office with a few computers sharing a single cable.

Advantages
● Simplicity
● Cost-Effective
● Ease of Expansion
● Scalability
Disadvantages

● Single Point of Failure

● Limited Cable Length
● Performance Degradation
● Difficulty in Troubleshooting
Star Topology
Introduction
❖ A Star topology is a type of network topology in which all the devices or nodes
are physically connected to a central node such as a router, switch, or hub.
Eg: Most homes, devices connect to a central hub/switch
Advantages

● Centralized management.
● Scalability.
● Good performance.
● Reliability.
Disadvantages

● Dependence on central hub.

● Higher cost.
● Increased cabling requirements.
● Limited performance in large networks.
Ring Topology
Introduction
❖ Ring topology is a type of network configuration in which each device on the
network is connected to two other devices, forming a “ring”.
Eg: Older phone systems where each phone connects to its neighbors in a
loop.
Advantages

● Reliable Data Flow

● Ordering
● Cost-Effective
Disadvantages

● Single Point of Failure

● Scalability Limitations
● Performance
● Troubleshooting Challenges
Mesh topology
Introduction
❖ A mesh topology is a type of computer network in which each node
(computer or other device) is connected to every other node in the
network.
Eg: Smart home network with devices connecting directly to each other in
a web-like structure.
Advantages
Redundancy and Reliability
Scalability
Improved Performance
Increased Security
Disadvantages
Higher Cost
Increased Management
Potential for Power Consumption
Tree Topology
In networking, tree topology is a structure where devices are connected
hierarchically. It resembles a tree with a root node and various branches.

Eg: Large corporate network with a central switch branching out to departmental
switches and then to devices.
Advantages
Scalability.
Improved Hierarchy and Management
Enhanced Performance
Fault Isolation
Disadvantages
Reliance on Root Device
Increased Cabling
Cost
Complexity
Hybrid topology

Introduction
❖ Hybrid topology is a network structure that combines two or more different
types of topologies, such as star, ring, bus, or mesh
Eg: A large campus with buildings using star topology internally, connected by
mesh or tree topology for the overall network.A large campus with buildings using
star topology internally, connected by mesh or tree topology for the overall
network.
Advantages
Scalability and Flexibility
Improved Performance
Enhanced Fault Tolerance
Accommodates Diverse Needs
Disadvantages

Increased Complexity
Higher Cost
Potential for Incompatibility
