Flexible Pavement Design –

AASHTO guide
Design Principle
Structural Number
 Abstract number that expresses strength of pavement

where.,
SNf = Required structural number
W18 = Design traffic
Pi = Initial serviceability index
Pt = Terminal serviceability index
Mr = Modulus of subgrade
So = Overall standard deviation
Zr = Std normal deviate

Design traffic
 Expressed in terms of MSA
 18 kip is the standard axle load

Resilient modulus of subgrade

 Determined using the following equation

Pavement Serviceability Index
 Indicates pavement performance
 Pi = Initial Serviceability Index at beginning of deign life
 Pt = Lowest acceptable level of serviceability index
 Values vary from 0 to 5
 Pi = 4.2 for flexible pavement & 4.5 for rigid pavement
 Pt = 2.5 for major highways & 2 for other roads
 Design serviceability loss = Pi- Pt

4 ©Jacobs 2023
Statistical parameters
 Indicates probability that pavement will function desirably throughout its design life

5 ©Jacobs 2023
Statistical parameters
 Indicative values of overall standard deviation = 0.35 for rigid pavements & 0.45 for flexible pavements
 Indicative values of Std normal deviate

Design Example
 Subgrade CBR = 11%
 Design traffic = 25 MSA

Design Example

Design Example
 a1 = 0.338
 a2 = 0.14
 a3 = 0.11
 m1 & m2 = 1.1
 D1 = 125mm = 4.921in
 D2 = 250mm = 9.842in
 D3 = 200mm = 7.874in

Snn = 4.13
Snn > Snf. Hence, pavement composition is safe.
