RAISING
POULTRY
POULTRY
There are also livestock and poultry regulations that you have to be
familiar with for compliance before the business operates. here are some
suggestions:
1. Check local laws and regulations, including national laws and regulation
requirements.
2. Determine allowed animals or poultry relative to farm location before
constructing housing, pens, and other structures
3. Conform with environmental and safety standards especially when it
comes to noise, odor, and waste produced.
POULTRY ANIMALS THAT YOU CAN RAISE
• CHICKEN – raising chicken has grown in popularity not only in rural
areas but also in cities and suburbs as well. Aside from chicken meat,
chicken eggs are great source of protein and added income. Chicken
dropping can also be a source of fertilizer for the garden or compost
bin.
HOUSE/CAGE

1. Space. The minimum requirement for each chicken is 0.93

m² to range and additional 0.37 m² of chicken coop space. A
1.83 by 3.05 m and a 1.22 by 1.83 m chicken coop is the
required space for a flock of six chickens.

2. Security and safety. The coop should be secured especially

at night because chickens are vulnerable to nocturnal animals
like cats, dogs, and other predators.
HOUSE/CAGE

3. Chicken needs a nest or box to lay their eggs, roosts, and

forage. Provide at least two boxes for six chickens, a roost for
them to sleep on and a space for them to run around and a
forage during the daylight time.

4. Location. Place the coop where it will be exposed to

maximum sunlight an area that is on higher ground and always
well drained.
Food/Diet

Chickens may be given

vegetables, breads, bugs and
corns.
Maintenance

When buying chicks and chickens choose a

variety of day old chicks available from local feed
stores Also choose whether the chicks you are
buying are layers that are ideal for producing eggs
or 45 days chicks that are ideal for producing
poultry.
For the first 60 days, the following are the things
needed:

Chick brooder -search for homemade brooder

through the Internet look for other sources like
books, magazines, etc.

Flooring -wood shavings and corn cob beddings

are the best because these are not slippery when
wet.
Temperature - 32°C to 38°C for the first
week and decrease to 15°C degrees
thereafter. Be cautious of fire hazards

Food and water - give chick crumbles or

starter feeds and provide a chick water
• QUAIL – locally known as pugo, it is a small game-hunting
bird found in temperate and tropical regions. Quail raising
provides many benefits for the family. It is easy and
inexpensive. The meat and egg provide healthy low-fat
nutrients.
These are the different quail breeds found in the
Philippines:

1. Native- a breed known as pugo, it is found in forests and is

not suitable for commercial production.
2. Negro - a breed that is black or grayish black in color.
3. Tuxedo - a breed that is black in color with a white spot on
the breast.
4. Silver -a breed that is white in color with black eyes.
5. Japanese Taiwan -a breed known as "chinese quail";
it has dark brown feathers mixed with white and gray.
6. Japanese Seattle - an american breed that is similar to
japanese taiwan; it has maroon feathers at the base of the
head.
House/cage
Raising quails can be done in a small cage measuring
0.6m x 1.22m x 0.3m, stacked in four decks, with 2.54 cm
between the decks. All the sides of the cage should be made of
wire mesh to prevent the birds from flying. Place the cage
under any root under an elevated house, or in a garage. Rats
are the greatest predator of quails, it is important that the cage
is rat-proof.
Food/Diet
The quail's feed should be 24 percent or higher in protein
content. Chicken feeds must be fed to quails. They may also be
given fruits, vegetables, and crushed shells or limestone for
sustained egg production. Always give them fresh water and
replace it twice a day especially during hot days. Light should
also be provided in the cage for them to continue to eat at
night. This will result in quails laying eggs in 24 hours.
Maintenance
Quails can be raised in any comfortable place
in your house. They do not easily contract
diseases unlike other poultry animals raising them
does not entail vaccination or drugs added to their
feed or water.
DUCK - just like chickens, raising ducks is profitable because of their
meat and eggs. ducks are raised to produced eggs turned into balut.
They are easy to raise because they require simple shelter and minimal
care. They are also more resistant to diseases.
The following are the duck breeds found in the
Philippines:

1. Native or Pateros Duck - a breed of duck that is

smaller than imported breeds. It is known as itik. The
native duck is also known as a non-sitter because it
frequently lays eggs but does not hatch them. It has
brown or white feathers mixed with black.
2. Peking Duck - a breed of duck that is
raised for its meat. It is often mistaken as a
goose because of its body that stands upright.

3. Khaki Campbell Duck - a breed of duck

that is extremely active on land It lays as
many as 300 eggs yearly.
4. Muscovy Duck - a breed of duck
that is known as pato real or bibe. Its
distinct features include having
small bulges on its face and being
heavy with yellow skin. The flesh of
this duck is of higher quality than
other breeds.
House/Cage

The housing of ducks can be made

from bamboo and nipa, with the front
side left open facing the lake or river.
The ideal size of the house must be 4 x 4
m and 3 m high for 100 ducks.
Food/Diet

Ducks should be fed with nutritious food

depending on their age. A wet starter
mash is given to ducklings for 8 weeks. A
mash feed is made up of com soybean,
fish, dried whey, rice bran, bone, and
oyster shell.
Food/Diet
Give them plenty of water. Then increase
their feed once the ducklings grow older
Start feeding them with tiny freshwater
snails and palay and after the fifth week,
give them leafy vegetables such as
camote leaves and kangkong.
Maintenance
Ducks do not need vaccinations because
they are generally healthy. They are not
usually susceptible to parasites because they
spend much time in water there is no natural
body of water around their shelter, it is best
to give them an improvised pool where they
can swim.
FISH
• FISH FARMING IS RAISING FISH COMMERCIALLY IN TANKS
OR FISH PONDS. IT IS AN OLD PRACTICE THAT IS FUN,
PRODUCTIVE, AND AT THE SAME TIME, REWARDING. THIS
IS TYPE OF VENTURE UTILIZES FISH FARMS AS
SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEM
HOW TO PLAN YOUR OWN POND
1. SELECT LOW SPOT IN YOUR BACKYARD WHERE WATER WOULD
NATURALLY COLLECT.
2. INCLUDED IN THE DESIGN THE PLAN ON HOW YOU WILL COLLECT THE FISH
SO THAT YOU CAN HARVEST THE FISH WHEN IT IS TIME TO HARVEST THEM
3. SEAL YOUR POND. FOR SMALL PONDS, LINE THE BOTTOM WITH
WATERPROOF PLASTIC LINER
4. SPREAD THE LINER OVER THE DESIRED SHAPE OF THE POND
5. FILL THE POND WITH WATER. DO THIS CAREFULLY TO MINIMIZE EROSION
6. LET THE WATER FLOW DOWN A PLASTIC SHEET AND OTHER SURFACE SO
THAT THE FLOW OF THE WATER DOES NOT DIG THROUGH THE SOIL OR CLAY
MIX
7. REMOVE THE PLASTIC ONCE THIS PROCESS IS DONE.
FISH THAT YOU CAN RAISE
TILAPIA- TILAPIA IS ONE OF THE MANY FISH SPECIES THAT ARE
CULTIVATED IN THE PHILIPPINES AND RANKS SECOND AS MOST
CULTIVATED FISH IN THE WHOLE WORLD. IT IS VERY POPULAR AND
ITS PRODUCTION CONTINUES TO INCREASE.
CARP - CARP IS ONE OF THE COMMONLY FARMED FISH. IT IS ALSO
ONE OF THE MOST CULTURED ORNAMENTAL FISH OUT OF THE MANY
ORNAMENTAL FISH SPECIES. SOME EXAMPLES OF THIS FISH SPECIES
ARE THE COMMON CARP OR EUROPEAN CARP, INDIAN CARP AND
CHINESE CARP
