Hydrologic Cycle

The document discusses the hydrologic cycle which is the continuous circulation of water on Earth through evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and collection. Water evaporates from bodies of water and plants, condenses into clouds, precipitates as rain, snow, or hail, and collects in bodies of water to complete the cycle.

HYDROLOGIC

CYCLE
WHAT DOES HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
MEANS?
The hydrologic cycle involves the continuous circulation of
water in the Earth-Atmosphere system. At its core, the water
cycle is the motion of the water from the ground to the
atmosphere and back again. Its a giant loop that uses the suns
energy to turn liquid water into vapor, transport heat through
the air and eventually return it to the earth as rain, snow, or
other forms precipitation.
MAIN STEPS IN HYDROLOGIC
CYCLE

Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Collection

Condensation

Precipitation Evaporation

Collection
EVAPORATION Condensation occurs when water
changes from a gas back into a liquid.
The liquid collects in the clouds.

Evaporation occurs when water is

heated by the sun, changing it from a
liquid to a gas that is known as water
vapor.
CONDENSATION
Precipitation occurs when water falls
COLLECTION back to earth. This can happen in the
form of rain, hail, sleet and snow.

Collection occurs when the

precipitation collects in oceans, lakes,
rivers and streams. It often soaks into
the ground and is stored as ground
water.
PRECIPITATION
• Sunshine heats up water in oceans,
lakes, rivers, and even puddles,
causing it to transform from a liquid
to a gas – water vapor – that rises into
the atmosphere. Plants also release
water vapor through their leaves in a
process called transpiration.

• As the water vapor rises, the cooler

temperatures make it condense into
tiny water droplets, forming clouds.

• When enough droplets gather in the

clouds, they become too heavy and
fall back to Earth's surface as rain,
snow, hail, sleet, or other forms of
precipitation.
• Water can also be collected in lakes, ponds, and even stay on leaves or other
surfaces for a while.

The cycle continues:

The collected water eventually evaporates again, rising back into the atmosphere,
and the cycle begins anew.

The water cycle is essential for life on Earth. It distributes freshwater around the
globe, supports plant growth, and influences weather patterns. It's constantly in
motion, ensuring a continuous supply of this vital resource.
