Work Clearance Management
Work Clearance Management
Standard Model
In the standard model, a work clearance application is used to control communication between orders and Operational
WCDs. Through its direct assignment to the orders, the work clearance application uses the approval status to control the
status “Released for execution” in the order.
Enhanced Model
In the enhanced model, a work clearance application is used to control communication between work approvals and
Operational WCDs. It is subordinate to the work approval.
2.Hot Work Permit: The Hot work is usually taken to apply to the operation that could include the application of the heat or the ignition sources to tanks, vessels, the
pipelines etc., which may contain or have the contained flammable vapor, or in areas where the flammable atmospheres may be present. It is typically colored red or the red-
edged.
3.Height Work Permit: Authorization to work on elevated spaces (2m from the ground) be it ladders, scaffolds, Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP) and other spaces
that are off the ground.
4.Confined space permit: A confined space entry also refer as vessel entry and OSHA defined the term permit-required confined space. Industries and some workplace have
equipment and areas fall under Confined space which is not meant work person but has a provision for personnel entry to perform a certain task. They include any vessel, tank,
container, pit, or any other similar space which has a very limited opening which is not suitable to work for a longer time and this enclosed system gives rise to the occurrence
of an accident.
5.Excavation Work Permit: This permit covers the Authorization for personnel to mine or dig land in order to build infrastructure, extract resources or unearth hidden
artifacts. The risk involved in excavation includes falling, being trapped, explosions, airborne contaminants, etc.
6.Electrical Work Permit: Electrical work is any work where the worker or the worker’s tools will intentionally be in contact with electrically energized circuits. Testing
and/or the use of testing equipment is not considered electrical work, unless the testing requires that the worker and/or the worker’s tools will intentionally be in contact with
the electrically energized circuits.
7.Special Hazard Work Permit: Special hazard work permit and industry and workplace specific, designed based on the hazard present in that particular organization. Link
Nuclear power station where the potential hazard is nuclear waster and radiation. In those industries, special hazard work permit are issues which are designed to safeguard
person from those hazards
8.Chemical Work Permit: This covers the authorization to work with harmful chemical substances or in a chemically induced atmosphere that is either toxic or corrosive by
nature. Chemical engineers that mostly work in chemical plants and labs.
Work Permit Level in usage (level 1 or Level 2)?
Work permits are categorized in different levels, depending on risk considerations and the need for
coordination.
Example: The oil and gas industry distinguishes between two levels of work permits:
•Work permits of level 1 are used for work that involves high risks and hazards. This work requires a
comprehensive safety and approval process. It includes hot work, work in an area with special entry
restrictions, and so on. Level 1 work permits are usually valid for only one working shift. An extension of the
work permit is only possible under certain conditions (for example, 4 hours). Afterwards, the work permit can
no longer be extended. If the work is not yet completed at this point in time, a new work permit must be
applied for.
•Work permits of level 2 are used for all work with lower risks/hazards. This work must also be completed
within a predefined time period, although the time period is defined more generously (for example, 14 days).

Job Hazard Analysis ?
Use
In addition to the other standard types of risk assessments, you can also perform job hazard analyses in SAP EHS Management.
In a job hazard analysis, you carry out the risk assessment process for the specific steps involved in performing a job or an activity.
You can generate a report for the job hazard analysis that summarizes all of the information in one document.
Risks
In other risk assessments, a risk is identified as a hazard at a specific location. However, in a job hazard analysis, a risk is identified
as a hazard associated with a specific job step. Each job step can have multiple hazards, which results in multiple risks that can
each be analyzed and evaluated.
Locations
You must specify one location that applies to the entire job hazard analysis and all associated risks. If the job is performed under
similar conditions in more than one location, you can add these locations on the Job Locations tab of the job hazard analysis.
Note
The locations added on the Job Locations tab are not assigned to the specific risks and, therefore, cannot be used later to search
for the risks.
Recommendation
If there are any significant variations between workplaces, we recommend you perform separate job hazard analyses.
