Globalisation: does it

How do you define

“globalisation” for
youself?
3

What is the globalisation?

Globalization is a term used to describe how trade and

technology have made the world into a more connected and
interdependent place. Globalization also captures in its scope the
economic and social changes that have come about as a result.
The more countries and regions of the world become
intertwined politically, culturally and economically, the more
globalized the world becomes.

How globalization works

In a globalized economy, countries specialize in the products and services they have a
competitive advantage in. This generally means what they can produce and provide most
efficiently, with the least amount of resources, at a lower cost than competing nations. If all
countries are specializing in what they do best, production should be more efficient worldwide,
prices should be lower, economic growth widespread and all countries should benefit.
Money, products, materials, information and people flow more swiftly across national
boundaries today than ever. Advances in technology have enabled and accelerated this flow and
the resulting international interactions and dependencies. These technological advances have
been especially pronounced in transportation and telecommunications.

G20 and its contribution

The G20 is a global bloc composed by the

governments and central bank governors from 19
countries and the European Union. Established in 1999,
the G20 gathers the most important industrialized and
developing economies to discuss international economic
and financial stability and relevant global problems.
Together, the nations of the G20 account for around
80% of global economic output, nearly 75 percent of all
global trade, and about two-thirds of the world’s
population.

Advantages and drawbacks

Let’s discuss what benefits and challenges globalization

brings to our life.

“The global village is a place
of very arduous interfaces
and very abrasive situations.”

— Marshall McLuhan

16

The development of the concept

Marshall McLuhan was the first theorist who in 1964 spoke of the idea of the Global
Village. He described the way how globalisation influenced not only market sphere but
also our lifestyle, behavior and manner of communication. M. McLuhan pointed out some
cornerstones which push the world to change into a real global village.
• Media communication has brought the world closer together, made our contacts more
and more international;
• We have the same big “text library” Google and mutual supermarkets;
• Transport communications and trade are becoming synonymic to the words freedom
and efficiency
17

Global village and its residents

This transformation of the world into one big village

has, according to McLuhan, also changed our
behaviors into those typical of a villager.
A world villager has customs, behaviors and feelings
very different from those we can imagine in a citizen
of the world, a world villager does not necessarily
resemble someone open, or educated, in fact in its
pejorative meaning McLuhan qualifies the villager as
someone rude, coarse.

How can we protect our cultural identity

difference, your DNA, your
look or heritage or religion or
your unusual name, that’s
when you start to shine.”
Bethenny Frankel
