ACTI N
“Openness may not
completely disarm
prejudice, but it’s a good
place to start.”
– Jason Collins

In 2014, Jason Collins made history by becoming the first male

professional athlete to publicly identify himself as gay. After his
announcement, a flood of other queer athletes began declaring their
sexuality, revealing to the world that some of our greatest sports figures
are in fact LGBTQ. This was a milestone for the fight for equality
because, as Collins says, being open about sexual orientation is an
important step towards ending prejudice.
LGBTQIA+: AN INTRODUCTION

LGBTQIA+ is an abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual,

transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and more.
These terms are used to describe a person’s sexual orientation
or gender identity.
If you don’t identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, asexual,
pansexual, queer or questioning, the chances are you almost
certainly know someone who does – it might be a friend, a
cousin, a niece, an uncle or a colleague. And you might even
consider yourself an “ally” to the LGBTQ community –
someone who speaks out if they witness discrimination or
derogatory remarks.

This project is an attempt at studying more about

LGBTQ+ community and people’s perception about
them based on a survey.
LESBIAN
A woman whose enduring physical, romantic,
and/or emotional attraction is to other women.
GAY
The adjective describes people whose
enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional
attractions are to people of the same sex.
BISEXUAL
A person who can form enduring physical,
romantic, and/or emotional attractions to those
of the same gender or more than one gender.
TRANSGENDER
An umbrella term for people whose gender
identity and/or gender expression differs from
what is typically associated with the sex they
were assigned at birth
QUEER

An adjective used by some people whose sexual orientation

is not exclusively heterosexual or straight. This umbrella
term includes people who have nonbinary, gender-fluid, or
gender nonconforming identities.
QUESTIONING
Sometimes, when the Q is seen at the end of LGBT, it can
also mean questioning. This term describes someone who
is questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity.
INTERSEX
An adjective used to describe a person with one or more
innate sex characteristics, including genitals, internal
reproductive organs, and chromosomes, that fall outside of
traditional conceptions of male or female bodies
ASEXUAL
The adjective describes a person who does not experience
sexual attraction in relationships.
+ PLUS
The ‘plus’ is used to signify all of the gender identities and
sexual orientations that letters and words cannot yet fully
describe.
1969: The Stonewall riots
spark the beginning of the
LGBT movement.
In the early morning hours on June 28, 1969,
police performed a raid of the Stonewall Inn,
a New York City gay bar — and the
customers and their supporters took a stand.
The event turned into a violent protest and led
02
01 to a days-long series of riots. Those 05
04
“Stonewall riots” are largely considered the
start of the LGBTQ civil rights movement in
the United States.

Right now, Mississippi does not fully protect LGBT

unfairly fired from jobs, denied housing, or be turned
away from public spaces because of who they are. How
does that make you feel?

Reflection

This project has allowed me to open up my mind

to the world around me. I am now fully aware of
the issues that the LGBTQ community has to
overcome daily. Before taking the topic I knew
the LGBTQ community did not have the same
rights as a heterosexual couple. I knew gay
marriage had recently been legalized in certain
states. This was a great victory for the
community. Their union could now be recognized
as legitimate in the eyes of the state. I have a
greater understanding of this community and the
many issues they must overcome. I truly admire
their perseverance and attitude.
CONCLUSION

As a final point, the LGBT community is still fighting

incredibly hard to get the rights that they deserve.
Throughout the years they have been through some horrible
incidents, but with those incidents there comes great
progress, we learn from these mistakes. For example, 49
LGBT people were killed in the Orlando shooting at the
Pulse Nightclub, (including the killer), and 53 people were
injured. Some of the people that have helped make this
possible include James Charles, who was the first male
model for CoverGirl, Ellen DeGeneres, who is a TV show
host, and Henry Hay, an LGBT activist. Although things
have improved, people are still fighting about the rights of
people who are a part of the LGBT community. As people,
it is important to continue to fight for these rights and stick
up for things when we see them getting discriminated, or
hurt either emotionally or physically.
“Hope for a better world, hope
for a better tomorrow, hope for a
better place to come to if the
pressures at home are too great.
Hope that all will be alright….
and you and you and you, you
have to give people hope.”
(Milk, 1973)
