Levels of prevention

Introduction
• Prevention of health problem is a major part of
community health practice. Prevention means
thinking ahead & prevent problems that may likely
occur or identifying them as early as possible in
order reduce likely disability & impairment.
• It is practiced on 4 levels
• Primordial prevention
• Primary prevention
• Secondary prevention
• Tertiary prevention
Primordial prevention
• This is a form of primary prevention.
• Prevention is targeted towards prevention of
development of risk factors in population in
which they have not developed.
• Targets are people who are healthy.
• Individual and population education are main
strategy
Primary prevention
• Primary prevention avoid the occurrence of a health
problem, it includes strategies that are used to
ensure illness or injuries does not occur.
• It predate disease or dysfunction state & is applied
to a generally healthy population.
• Target is people who are at risk but are yet to
develop the disease
• It involves steps that are taken to prevent the
occurrence of the disease
Primary prevention
• The aim of primary prevention is health promotion
through health education activities focused towards
maintaining and improving the general health of
individual, family, group and the community as a
whole.
• Health education targets personal hygiene,
immunization rest & recreation, environmental
sanitation, waste disposal, vector control etc.
• Actions includes population strategy and high risk
strategy
Secondary prevention
• Actions are geared towards early detection &
treatment of existing health problem at the earliest
possible stage when disease or impairment already
exist.
• Action hinders progress of disease.
• Focuses on individuals who are experiencing health
problems or illness and are at risk of developing
complications or worsening conditions.
Secondary prevention
• Activities are directed at diagnosis and prompt
intervention thereby reducing the severity of
the disease
• And enabling the patient to return to a normal
level of health as early as possible
Tertiary prevention

• Tertiary prevention measures begin from when a


defect or disability occur permanently and becomes
irreversible
• Actions at this level is targeted at slowing down the
extent & severity of a disease/disability in order to
reduce complications & prevent it from getting
worst.
Tertiary prevention
• Activities are directed at rehabilitation.
• It is aimed at returning the client to the
highest level of functioning possible.
• Activities at this level includes post
mastectomy exercise program to restore
functioning, treatment &management of
diabetes to slow down progress rate.
