What is meant by generosity?
Generosity is the quality of being kind, selfless, and giving
towards others without expecting anything in return. It is a
virtue that not only brings delight to the receiver, but also the
giver since it creates a positive impact on both sides, sharing
joy and happiness.
Anything given generously, with the intention of pleasing
Allah is a form of generosity. It can be as simple as a smile,
helping an elderly person with their groceries or removing
objects from the road.
However, being kind does not only mean giving freely what
you have in abundance. It does not mean to give away
something you don't like or something that isn't useful
anymore but in means to give something we adore.
What is the importance of generosity in our daily lives?
Generosity promotes empathy, strengthens relationships, as well as unity and brotherhood.
In Islam, generosity holds great importance for it is seen as a way to earn Allah the Almighty’s pleasure and
blessings, both in this world and the Hereafter.
If a person becomes generous, people start to admire, respect, and love him.
Generosity prevents the love of worldly stuff and possessions build in our heart.
Generosity was one of the great qualities that our Holy Prophet(PBUH) possessed. One day he(PBUH) offered
prayer in the mosque and then hurriedly went to his house and returned immediately. A companion asked why he
did so and he(PBUH) replied:
“I left a piece of gold at home which was given for charity and I disliked letting it remain a night in my house, so I
bought it to the mosque to distribute.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
This incident shows that Allah is the creator of everything and that everything will return to him, so it is crucial to
behave that everything we possess is given by Allah to us to share to his other creations.
What is meant by sacrifice?
Sacrifice means to put someone else's needs before
your own. Sacrifice is a more noble virtue than
generosity since a person does not fulfill his needs
just to fulfill some else’s needs. In other words,
sacrifice means to give up your own happiness just in
order to make someone else happy. A simple act of
sacrifice can be giving your food to a hungry poor
guy, when you yourself are hungry.
The act of sacrifice explains the concept of
‘Submission to Allah’, which means that a person
does this good deed only to impress Allah, meaning
to gain his pleasure and rewards.
What is the importance of sacrifice in our daily lives?
Sacrifice is an important noble quality because it strengthens our faith, promotes brotherhood and love in society. It
is a powerful symbol of faith and challenges the believers to prioritize their faith over their needs and desires. The
act of sacrificing also makes us happy also since we are making other people’s life easy.
Ibrahim(AS)’s sacrifice is something that Muslims remember every Eid-ul-Azha during the month of Dhul Hujjah,
when Muslims from all over the world sacrifice an animal for the sake of Allah the Almighty.
Parents make many sacrifices to bring up their children; for their food, clothing, education, etc.
Nowadays, it has become necessary for both parents to work, to keep up the expenses. With such a tough routine,
family time is also sacrificed.
As students, a lot of energy and time that could have been spent on hobbies or socializing, is sacrificed for studying
and getting good grades.
Moreover, working individuals also sacrifice most of their energy in order to earn a living and become financially
stable and independent.
