Introduction of tools
INTRODUCTION
 A tool is any instrument or simple piece of equipment that you hold in your hands
and use to do a particular kind of work. For example, spades, hammers etc.
 Not only in automobile industries, but other industries also.
 Tools and equipment's used in earlier days are poor and not accurate compared to
the present situation.
 By using modern tools, the mechanic can easily identify and rectify the fault this
can increase the productivity .

MEASURING TOOLS
A measuring is anything used to take a count of quantitative data, such as weight,
length, time or temperature
 Different type of measuring tools
• Screw gauge
• Vernier caliper
• Measuring tape
• Feeler gauge
• Dial gauge
• Bore gauge
• Multimeter
SCREW GAUGE

 A screw gauge is a measuring instrument that is


used to determine the diameter of a screw
thread or the thickness of an object.
 It is also known as a micrometer screw gauge.
 The screw gauge is a very precise instrument,
and it is commonly used in manufacturing and
engineering.
MEASURING TAPE

 A measuring tape is a flexible, portable tool used for measuring distances.


 It consists of a marked ribbon that can extend and retract from a housing,
enabling precise measurements in various fields like construction, sewing,
and DIY projects.
 Typically available in various lengths, it's a versatile tool for length and
distance assessments.
VERNIER CALIPER

 A vernier caliper, often simply referred to as


a vernier, is a precision measuring
instrument used to measure linear
dimensions, both internally and externally,
with high accuracy.
FEELER GAUGE
 Feeler gauge is used to measure or set
very small gaps, normally under 1mm.
 It is also called thickness gauges.
 It is of two types metric and imperial
feeler.
DIAL GUAGE
 Dial gauges are measuring instruments that can
accurately measure minute lengths and
displacements.
 It consist of a spring-loaded probe that drives a
pointer around a circular scale via rack and pinion
gearing.
BORE GAUGE
 Bore gauge is a tool used to measure the size of a
particular hole.
 Bore gauges are also known as cylinder tests, bore mics,
internal micrometers, hold bore gauges, or telescoping
gauges.
MULTIMETER
 A multimeter is a measuring instrument that can
measure multiple electrical properties.
 Multimeter can measure voltage, resistance and
current.
HAND TOOLS

Hand tools are those which are directly used by mechanics to do certain task which uses
only man power.

HAMMERS
 Hammer is a tool mostly a hand tool consisting of a weighted head fixed to along
the handle that is used to deliver an impact to smaller area of an object. Eg- a
nail to a wood.
 It consist of a head , a handle ( for normal work, the handle length is about 250 to
300 mm, for heavy work 350 to 400 mm)

SCREW DRIVER
 A tool for turning screw that has a handle at the one end and a metal rod
at the other end, shaped to fit to the top of the screw.
 Shank material - vanadium steel
 Tip material - steel, e.g.- SAE 6150 steel

RATCHET SET

 A combination of wrench sets come with a box


design on one end of the handle with a gear
mechanism that allows the wrench to rotate
freely in one direction.
 The tool box consist of ratchets, long and short
boxes, universal joint and extension rod.
 A ratchet handle, often referred to simply as
a ratchet, is a mechanical tool used to apply
torque in one direction while allowing free
movement in the opposite direction.
 It is commonly used with sockets and socket
wrenches to tighten or loosen nuts, bolts, and
other fasteners.
 The key feature of a ratchet handle is its
ability to engage with a socket in a way that
allows the user to turn the fastener without
having to remove and reposition the tool for
each turn.
SPANNERS
 Tool with shaped opening or jaws for griping and turning nut or
bolts .
 These are generally made up of drop forge steel or carbon steel
 Composition - iron and steel
 Making process is forging

OPEN END SPANNERS
 In these type of spanner only one end is open in
which nut or bolt head is griped to loose or tight.
 It is also know as single end spanners.
 Size is taken from distance between the jaws.
Thus the selection of spanners is made according
to distance between opposite side of the nut or
bolt.
RING SPANNER
 A ring-shaped end that fits over the fastener, which
provides more contact points and a better grip
compared to an open-ended wrench.
 Ring spanners come in various sizes and are typically
designed to fit specific sizes of nuts and bolts.
 They are commonly used in automotive repair,
construction, and various other mechanical
applications.
BOX SPANNER
 A versatile hand tool used for turning nuts,
bolts, and other fasteners.
 It consists of a cylindrical or hexagonal
socket with a handle or ratcheting
mechanism.
 Box spanners are designed to fit over the
head of a fastener, providing a secure grip
and allowing for the application of torque
COMBINATION SPANNER
 A combination spanner, also known as a combination
wrench, is a versatile hand tool used for turning nuts,
bolts, and other fasteners.
 It is called a "combination" spanner because it has two
different types of ends, providing flexibility for various
applications
T SPANNER

 T-Handle Design: A T-handle wrench features a handle that


is shaped like the letter "T," with a crossbar extending
horizontally from the top of the vertical handle. This design
allows for a firm and comfortable grip while providing
leverage for turning fasteners.
 Variety of Uses: T-handle wrenches are versatile tools used
in various applications, including automotive repair,
machinery maintenance, and construction. They are
commonly used when you need to apply torque and control
to fasteners.
ADJUSTABLE SPANNER
 An adjustable spanner, commonly known as an adjustable wrench or
crescent wrench named after the Crescent Tool Company which
popularized the design
 A versatile hand tool designed for gripping and turning a wide range
of nuts, bolts, and other fasteners. The key feature of an adjustable
spanner is its adjustable jaw size, which can be adapted to fit
different fastener sizes.
CHISEL
It is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge of blade on
its end for carving or cutting a hard material such us wood, metal
etc.
FILES
 It is a tool used to remove fine amount of material from a work piece. It is
commonly used in wood working, metal working etc.
 Common material used in files are high carbon steel.
PLIERS
 Pliers are the hand tools used to hold objects, they are also useful for
bending ,physically compressing, wide range of material.
 Material - steel alloy additives such as chromium or vanadium to improve
reliability and to prevent corrosion.
 Parts of pliers - jaws , pipe grip, handles, cutter, fulcrum.

ALLEN KEY

 These are thin steel rods with six faces that are
bent at 90 degree angle from once end.
 These are available in different sizes.

Power tools are those tools which are operated by external input like electric
current, fuels, compressed air etc.

PNEUMATIC TOOLS

Pneumatic tools are those tools which are powered by compressed air from the
compressor.(Basically compressor pressure is around 4 to 6 bar).

AIR DRILL

 An Air drill is a pneumatic tool powered by

materials.
AIR GRINDER
 An Air grinder, also known as a pneumatic

 Air grinders are preferred for their ability to

demanding applications.
PNEUMATIC GUN
 A pneumatic gun, also known as an air gun.
 It is tool that uses compressed air to propel projectiles, such as pellets,
paintballs, or darts.
 Pneumatic guns can vary widely in design and purpose.
 They operate by releasing a burst of compressed air to launch projectiles

PAINT SPRAYER

 A paint sprayer is a mechanical device used to apply paint,

spray pattern.

quickly and provide a smooth, even finish.

HYDRAULIC PULLER

PISTON COMPRESSOR
