Lesson 1-Communication Pre Requisite
Lesson 1-Communication Pre Requisite
Enhance Comunication
Comunication
When will A Child
Communicate ??
• Having reasons and motivations for
communication
• Experiencing opportunities to
communicate
• Access to a means of communication
• Support to ensure that communication
is successful
Communication
Even before using the first words a baby needs to:
• have a need to communicate with others
• hear language being used around them
• learn that the language they hear means something
• be able to make the sounds that eventually they
will use to form words
• pick out the differences between sounds they hear
in the language around them.
Next Step
The next step requires building up words by:
• understanding words have meaning
• saying the first word
• linking two and more words
• putting words together in the right order
• understanding and using the social rules of
communication.
Prelinguistic Skills
• Skills which children require before
they start learning language
• 1) eye gaze , eye contact
• 2) Sitting behaviour
• 3) Attention Span
• 4) Imitation
Sitting Behaviour
• Its important for the child to sit in
one place and attend to an activity
for language devpt . This is pre
requirement For learning
How to increase Sitting
Behaviour
• Find out childs interest for eg it could be a
car
• Get a low-level table and chair
• Seat the child and you sit across the table .
• Spend a few minutes playing meaningfully
with the car .
• Reinforce the child
Eye Contact
• Eye contact is important in a child , it
suggests full visual attention on the
object , and there by increases
comprehension
How to increase Eye
Contact
• Bring the toy to the childs face and your face
level
• Request for eye contact (Specific ) Verbal
command for eye gaze
• Immediately reinforce the eye contact
• Increase the eye contact for that particular
object by talking abt it meaning fully
Eye Contact shift
• Address the child by name
• Ask him to look at you
• Now direct his eye gaze to another
object mentioned
• When he looks reinforce him
Attention Skills
• Seat the child with a pre determined time goal
• Get him to do the activity
• Immediate reinforcement .
Imitation
• Gross motor Imitation
• Fine motor imitation
• Verbal Imitation
• Child who imitates develops faster
language skills
How to teach imitation
• Use of nursery rhymes
• Use mirror and play with expressions
• Give meaning to each gesture
Gestures
• Children with Language DO NOT learn words easily from
speech alone.
• Associated gesture is a BRIDGE for spoken language –
KEYWORD SIGNS augment speech.
• Signing NOT an alternative.
• Signs dropped as child learns the word.
• Reduces frustration – helps communication
Signing makes speech visual
VISUAL LEARNERS!!!!!!!
Types of Gestures
• Contact gesture – Basically touch and tell . Eg if the child
wants mama he touches her
• Distal gesture – Here pointing with index finger begins as
form of gesture
Benefits
• Makes speech visual
• Focuses the child’s attention to listen to what is said
• Support children to understand what is said, by SHOWING as
well as TELLING
• Help children to learn and remember new words
• Children have larger vocabularies when in sign supported
environments
Enable the child to:
• Use signs for words s/he cannot yet say
• Get the message across when speech is unclear.
• Reduce Frustration
Visual prompt cards
• Allow the child to communicate
visually before they can verbally
Problem Solving
• Increase basic problem solving skills at an early age which
helps the child develop his language skills
• Eg keep a toy in a simple lid box , demonstrate to the child
and then let him do it
• take a pipe and role a small ball through it , once the child
learns this now keep two balls one big which cant role down
the pipe and one small which can and let the child try
• Eg :- Block Child Finds a way to go
Picture Communication
Systems (PECS)
– Make picture boards of objects in the home
– Locate throughout the home
– Place visually enticing toys in clear containers
– Do the same with videos, foods
• Make 2 sets of pictures initially for object
and teach basic exchange to enhance
Communication
SIMPLE INSTRUCTION
• In order to develop comprehension
and expression , the child should be
able to follow simple instrcutions
• Begin with identification through eye
gaze , pointing , then bring the
product . Its important to do this
with visually present objects
Increase Vocabulary
• It is of utmost important when you give your child
a vocal reinforcement for the correct words and
remodel his wrong words with contextual
addition .
• Eg “ ca...” , t: oh “you want the car” ,c:”ca..” , t: yes
but which car the biggg car or the small car ?”
• C: “ca .. “ T : “ ok point do you want this biggg ca
or this small car ?”
• C: points .
Tips for Language
Training
• Use gesture & sign with spoken word – gestures and vocalisation
preceeds speech
• Surround by good language models.
• Simple & direct language.
• Clear, concise instructions.
• Give extra time to respond
• Support language visually – objects, photographs, pictures, photos,
text, drawings, symbols.
• Understand the child ,
• Give words to the childs action to enhance the vocabulary
• Remodelling of the words said by the child
Activities
• Get into groups and teach
• One Activity for Each of the
following
• Eye contact , imitation , Attention
Skills , Instruction .
