LI: I can create use personification extensively

1. Think of a place you know very

well. What would you describe?

2. What words could you use to this

place? (Think adjectives, nouns,
adverbs, verbs.)
Learning Intention:
- To develop a greater use of personification

Personification is the attributing (giving) of human characteristics,

thoughts and/or feelings to something that is not human.

Consider how personification can add to a description.

Adjectives to describe emotions
Write a list of synonyms for each of the feelings below. Your synonyms can
be slightly different emotions, as long as they are clearly linked to the
main emotions listed.
Feelings:
• Happy
• Sad
• Angry
• Fearful
• Surprised
Using human emotions to create personification

Adding an adjective that describes a human feeling to something not

human creates personification. For example:

The stubborn door closed once again.

Agitated, the brambles scratched at my skin.

What is the effect of adding an adjective?

How are adjectives used here to create personification?

The relaxed waves lapped at the side of the boat. The sea was calm and
welcoming as we adjusted the sail. It caught a lazy gust of wind that
moved us Northwards. More waves greeted the bow as we travelled,
delivering cheerful flecks of water over those on board.
