What is SAT exam ?
SAT is a standardized test administered by the College Board and students seeking
admission to undergraduate schools in countries such as USA, Canada, Singapore,
UK, etc. are required to take it. SATs have been developed to evaluate the reading,
writing and math skills of the candidates.
Every year, around three million students take the SAT exam.
SAT is currently administered as a paper-pencil based exam.
There used to be two types of SAT exams, SAT–general, and SAT–subject test;
however, College Board has discontinued the SAT–subject test since 2020.
Previously, the SAT exam was conducted with an essay, but from the past two years,
the college board is offering the SAT exam without an essay.
From 2023, the SAT exam will be administered as an online exam for International
students, i.e. students outside USA.
History of SAT exam
Robert Yerkes developed a test known as “Army Alpha Test” during World War I for
army recruitment.
Later it was adapted by Carl Brigham in 1926 to test college admissions.
The test was designed to measure “thinking skills one requires to succeed in
college and career”.
It was used by Harvard in 1933 to award scholarships to academically gifted
students, who did not come from boarding schools.
It became the national standard for college admissions in USA in 1943.
Within 15 years of its standardisation, it administered over half a million students.

Who should take the SAT ?
Students willing to study in countries like the USA, Canada, Singapore, the UK, etc.
are required to take the SAT exam.
Students aspiring to study in universities such as Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Cambridge,
Georgia Tech. need to appear for the SAT exam.
Right time to prepare for SAT exam
Indian students shall start their preparation for SAT exam during their 10 th or 11th class.
Preparation shall start during their summer holidays hence they can take their SATs in
the month of October, and if required in the month of December. This will not coincide
with their final exams in March.
