Objectives

1. Describe lesson planning.

2. Enlist different types of teaching
strategies.
3. Define the process of prepairing and the
usage of teaching aids.
4. Describe the advantages and
disadvantages of teaching aids.
5. Discuss the methods of evaluation of
lesson planning. 3
Lesson Planning

A lesson plan is the

instructor's road map of
what students need to learn
and how it will be done
effectively during the class
time. Then, you can design
appropriate learning
activities and develop
strategies to obtain feedback
on student learning. 4
Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies refer to the different techniques

that educators use to deliver information to
learners. The following are some commonly used
strategies:
1. Lectures: A lecture is a
spoken presentation given
by an instructor to a group
of students. The goal of a
lecture is to provide
information to students.
5
2. Role-play: In a role-play,
students take on different roles to
act out a scenario. Role-plays are
used to teach communication
skills, problem-solving, and
decision-making.
3. Journals: Journaling involves
writing down thoughts,
observations, and ideas in a
notebook or online platform.
Journals are used to encourage
reflection, critical thinking, and
6 self-awareness.
4. Brainstorming:
Brainstorming is a group
activity where students come up
with ideas to solve a problem or
answer a question. It is used to
stimulate creativity and
generate a range of ideas.
5. Demonstrations:
Demonstrations involve
showing students how to do
something. They are used to
7 teach hands-on skills and
techniques.
6. Self-learning: It refers to the
process of acquiring knowledge
independently, without the aid of a
teacher. Self-learning can be
facilitated through reading,
watching videos, or attending
online courses.
7. Clinical areas: It refer to
settings where healthcare
professionals work with patients.
Students in healthcare programs
often participate in clinical
8
rotations to gain hands-on
experience.
8. Labs: Labs are facilities
equipped with specialized
equipment where students can
conduct experiments and
practice techniques.

9. Field trips: Field trips

involve taking students to
locations outside of the
classroom to learn about a
topic in a real-world context
9
10. Small group learning: Small
group learning involves breaking
students into smaller groups to
work on activities or projects
together. It is used to encourage
collaboration and build teamwork
skills.
11. Co-operative learning:
Involves students working
together to achieve a common
goal. It is used to develop
communication, leadership, and
1
teamwork skills. 0
Techniques to increase learners' participation
include:

Asking open-ended questions

Encouraging discussion and debate
Providing opportunities for hands-on activities
Using games and simulations
Providing positive feedback and reinforcement
11
Preparing Teaching Materials

Preparing teaching materials involves creating

content and activities that support the learning
objectives of the lesson. Some tips for preparing
teaching materials at a low cost include:

Reusing materials from previous lessons

Utilizing online resources such as Open Educational
Resources (OERs)
Creating materials from scratch using free tools such
as Google Docs and Canva
1
2
Teaching aids are visual or audio tools that are
used to enhance the learning experience. Some
commonly used teaching aids include:

Whiteboards and markers

PowerPoint presentations
Videos
Models and diagrams
Handouts and worksheets
1
3
The advantages of using teaching aids include:

1. They make learning more engaging and

interactive
2. They can simplify complex information
3. They cater to different learning styles

The disadvantages of using teaching aids include:

4. They can be distracting

5. They can become the focus of the lesson rather
than the learning objectives 1
6. They may not be accessible to all learners 4
Evaluation of Lesson Planning

Evaluation is the collection of

feedback on a course to
determine how the course
content and presentation has
been received. Evaluation is
essential in ensuring quality
control. Evaluation of lesson
planning involves assessing the
effectiveness of the teaching
strategies and materials used.
1
5
Some methods of evaluation include:

Pre- and post-tests to measure knowledge

gained student feedback surveys.
Observations of student engagement and
participation.
Reflection on the effectiveness of the lesson by
the instructor.
1
6
Feedback received in this way provides
information on the:

Standards of the course

 Materials distributed
 Delivery methodologies used
 Nature of the group dynamics and tutor/learner
report
 Ability of students to transfer knowledge gained
