FILTRATION

What is filtration?

 Filtration is a technique to separate mixture.

 It is a process used to separate solid
particles from a liquid or gas by passing the
mixture through a filter.
 The ancient Egyptians used the first ceramic
filters made out of porous clay pots. The
famous Greek physician Hippocrates is noted
as the inventor of ‘Hippocrates’ Sleeve’. This
was a piece of cloth used for filtering which
had boiled water poured through in order to
help further purify it.
Equipment used in filtration process:

FUNNEL
 funnel is a tube or pipe that is wide at the top
and narrow at the bottom, used for guiding liquid
or powder into a small opening
FILTER PAPER
 Filter paper is a semi-permeable paper barrier
placed perpendicular to a liquid or air flow. It is
used to separate fine solid particles from liquids
or gases.
Equipment used in filtration
process:
Erlenmeyer flask

-are conical flask with wide flat bottom and

tapered neck.
In the laboratory, filtration can be done
just as in the coffee filter. A filter paper is
placed in a funnel and the mixture is
poured in, and the liquid drips out under
gravity. The liquid that drips through the
filter paper is called the “filtrate”.
Example of filtration process

Sand filtration
Coffee filters
Tea bags
Water filter
