Birth rate is the most basic indicator of fertility. It's defined as the number of live
births per 1000 estimated mid-year population in a given year.
Formula:
Birth Rate = (Number of live births during the year / Estimated mid-year
population) * 1000
Note: Birth rate is not a perfect measure of fertility because the entire population
is not exposed to childbearing. Therefore, it may not accurately reflect the fertility
of a population.
2. General fertility rate
(GFR)
GFR is the number of live births per 1000 women in the reproductive age-
group (15-44 or 49 years) in a given year.
Formula:
GFR = (Number of live births in an area during the year / Mid-year female
population age 15-44 (or 49) in the same area in same year)
* 1000
Note: GFR is a better measure of fertility than the crude birth rate because
the denominator is restricted to women in the childbearing age, rather than
the entire population. However, it still has a limitation: not all women in the
denominator are exposed to the risk of childbirth.
3. General marital fertility
rate (GMFR)
The marriage rate is the number of marriages in a year per 1000 population.
Crude Marriage Rate:
Crude Marriage Rate = (Number of marriages in the year / Mid-year population) * 1000
Demographers consider the crude marriage rate unsatisfactory because the denominator
primarily consists of people who are not eligible to marry. A more sensitive rate is the
general marriage rate:
General Marriage Rate:
General Marriage Rate = (Number of marriages within one year / Number of unmarried
persons aged 15-49 years) * 1000
The general marriage rate is more accurate when computed for women than for men
because more men than women marry at older ages.

Key takeaways from this presentation:
• A variety of fertility indicators exist: Birth rate, general fertility rate, age-specific fertility
rate, total fertility rate, and others are used to measure different aspects of fertility.
• Each indicator has its own strengths and limitations: Some indicators are more
sensitive to changes in fertility patterns, while others may be affected by factors like age
structure and marriage rates.
• Fertility trends can be analyzed at different levels: Understanding fertility patterns at
the national, regional, and local levels provides valuable insights into population dynamics.
• Fertility is influenced by various factors: Social, economic, cultural, and health factors
can impact fertility decisions.
• Accurate and reliable data is crucial: Accurate data on fertility indicators is essential for
informed policymaking and effective interventions.
