● Folders on a computer are like drawers that


help us keep things neat.Like a drawer for
your clothes
● A folder is where we store our files.

● Folders contain different files, like music,
pictures, or homework
● What kinds of files would you expect to find in a
homework folder?
Naming Files

How Do We Name Files


● file names tell us what's inside.
● If I name a file ‘Homework.doc,’ what do you think is inside?
Why We Name Files Clearly

● Poorly Named Files:


○ an example of a poorly named file like ‘random123.doc.’
○ What’s in this file?
○ Question: Would you know what's inside just by looking
at the name?
○ Is it easier or harder to find things when files have names like
'random123'?
Organize Your Files!

Put files into folders that make sense."

Example: Music goes in a ‘Music’ folder, Homework goes in a ‘Homework’ folder.


Activity – Create Your Own Folders and Files

● Instructions: Think about different types of work or fun things you do


(like homework, music, or pictures). Now, create your own files by
writing the names of those things on pieces of paper. Then, put them
into folders (we’ll use envelopes as folders) to organize them.
● Materials:
○ Pieces of paper (for students to write file names)
○ Envelopes (to act as folders)
Rename Your Files

● Rename files to make them easier to find.


● Example: Rename ‘random123.doc’ to ‘Math
Homework.doc
Activity – Organize Files and Folders in Google Drive and
File Explorer
Part 1: Organizing Files in File Explorer (Local Storage)
Instructions for Students:
1. Open File Explorer:
○ Step 1: On your computer, open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).
2. Create Folders:
○ Step 1: Right-click in an empty area of your desktop or inside a folder.
○ Step 2: Select New Folder and give it a name (e.g., "Homework," "Music,"
or "Pictures").
○ Step 3: Repeat this process to create 2-3 folders.
3. Create Files:
○ Step 1: Open a word processing program (like Word or Notepad).
○ Step 2: Type a short sentence (e.g., “My Homework”).
○ Step 3: Save the file by choosing the appropriate folder from the ones you
created (e.g., save "My Homework.doc" inside the "Homework" folder).

Move Files to Folders:

● Step 1: If you’ve saved files to the wrong place, move them into the correct
folder by dragging them in File Explorer or using the "Move to" option.

Review Your Work:

● Open your folders and make sure everything is in the right place. Can you
find your files easily?
Organizing Files in Google Drive (Cloud Storage)

Instructions for Students:

1. Open Google Drive:


○ Step 1: Go to drive.google.com and sign in with your school account.
2. Create Folders:
○ Step 1: Click the + New button and select Folder.
○ Step 2: Name the folder (e.g., "Homework," "Music," or "Pictures").
○ Step 3: Repeat this to create 2-3 folders, similar to what you did in File Explorer.
3. Create Files in Google Drive:
○ Step 1: Click on + New and select Google Docs.
○ Step 2: Type something simple, like “My Homework” or “Favorite Song Lyrics.”
i. Step 3: Save the file by clicking on the document title and moving it into one of your folders in
Google Drive.
○ Move Files into Folders:
i. Drag files into the correct folders in Google Drive or use the Move to option to organize them
properly.
○ Review Your Work:
i. Open your folders in Google Drive and check that everything is organized correctly.
