ONGOING SCAMS

IN INDIA

A Detailed Overview of
Internet, Telephonic, Email,
and Vishing Scams.
SCAM
INTERNET SCAMS (1/2)
 Phishing:- Scammers impersonate Indian
banks, government services (e.g., income tax
refunds), or websites like Amazon. Victims are
directed to fake pages to input personal info.
 Fake Job Offers:- Scammers pose as HR
reps via LinkedIn or Naukri. Interviews are
conducted on WhatsApp or Zoom, and job
seekers are asked for a security deposit for
fake jobs.
INTERNET SCAMS (2/2)
 Online Shopping Fraud:- Fake websites or ads
promote discounted goods. Victims pay but either receive
counterfeit items or nothing at all. Fake customer support is
also used.

 Investment Fraud:- Ponzi schemes and apps


promising high returns (crypto currency scams) lure victims to
invest, then siphon the money off. Promoted on
WhatsApp/YouTube.
 Lottery Scams:- Victims receive fake notifications of
winning international lotteries, asked to pay processing fees.
Fake RBI or customs documents are often used.
TELEPHONIC SCAMS (1/2)
 KYC Fraud:- Fraudsters claim to be bank or
payment service reps (Paytm, PhonePe), asking
for KYC updates. Victims share Aadhar, PAN, or
OTP, leading to account access.
 SIM Swap Fraud:- Fraudsters impersonate
the victim to telecom operators and get a new
SIM card to access OTPs and withdraw money
from the victim’s bank account.
TELEPHONIC SCAMS (2/2)
 One Ring Scam:- Victims receive missed
calls from international numbers
(Botswana, Maldives). Calling back incurs
premium charges, profiting the scammer.

 Fake Tech Support:- Fraudsters posing


as tech support from companies like JIO
or Microsoft offer help with a virus issue.
They gain remote access and steal
personal data.
EMAIL SCAMS
 Business Email
Compromise (BEC):-
Scammers hack/spoof
executive emails to request
fraudulent payments from
finance departments, leading
to significant financial loss.
 Govt Impersonation
Emails:- Emails claiming to
be from the Income Tax Dept.
offer tax refunds via a link
that leads to fake websites to
collect banking details.
 Prize-Winning Emails:-
Scammers email fake lottery
winnings, asking for bank info
to 'claim the prize' or
charge processing fees.
VISHING SCAMS (1/2)
 Voice Phishing:- Scammers posing as Income
Tax Dept. or bank officials demand payment or
sensitive details to resolve fake issues. Victims
share OTPs, account numbers.

 Fake Police/Tax Authorities:- Fraudsters claim


to be police or tax officials, threatening victims with
legal action unless they pay or provide sensitive
information.
VISHING SCAMS (2/2)
 Banking Scams:- Fraudsters pose as bank officials
claiming the victim’s account is compromised,
asking for sensitive info like PIN or OTP, which is
then used to drain funds.

 Impersonation Scams:- Scammers impersonate


friends/colleagues in distress (accidents,
emergencies)
and request money transfers to their accounts.
OTP AND ACCOUNT ACCESS
SCAMS
 Impersonation of Bank, Telecom, or UPI
Company Officials:-
 Fraudsters call, claiming an issue with the
account or service, asking for OTP to resolve the
issue. Once received, they drain the account.

 Victims are often tricked into believing their


account is at risk and provide the OTP under
pressure.
