Parallelism is the linking
together of similar
grammatical parts in a
sentence where items in a
series must have parallel
structure.
Parallel Structure means using
the same pattern of words to show
that two or more ideas have the
same level of importance. This can
happen at three levels:
1. words
2. phrases
3. clauses
Examples
1. I am reading about cinema,
photography,
and sculpture.
2. I plan to walk the dog, write a letter,
and
go to bed.
3. He was talking on the phone, and
doing
his homework at the same time.
4. We expect that the dinner will be over
by 9
and that we’ll be home by 10.
5. The route crosses the river and
climbs up the mountain.
6. The car is parked in front of the truck
and
behind the motorcycle.
Recognizing Parallel Structure. In each sentence
below, underline the parallel structures.
1. A person who gives to charity and who helps others is
rare indeed.
2. In his career he has been an accountant, an expediter,
and a
consultant.
3. Growing very slowly and then bursting into glorious
color is a
characteristic of that tropical plant.
4. I have had virtually no peace since my daughter left and

or more parts of a sentence are equivalent in
meaning but not grammatically similar in form.
