DESCRIBING

RELATION OF
WORK AND
ENERGY
MODULE 9
OBJECTIVES

1. Relate work done with

kinetic and potential
energy.
2. Solve problems involving
kinetic and potential
energy.
What -Energy is the ability to
do work.

is -Everything that
happens in the world
ENER uses energy!
-Most of the time we
GY? can’t see energy, but
it is everywhere
around us!
What are Kinetic and Potential
Energy?
Batteries store energy!
This car uses a lot of energy

Even this sleeping puppy is

using stored energy. We get our energy from FOOD!
The energy stored
WHAT in an object.
IS "Potential"
POTENTIAL simply means the
energy has the
ENERGY? ability to do
something useful
later on.
Examplesof Potential Energy
A stretched rubber band.. Yo–Yo held in your hand.
MAIN CONCEPT:

BRICK HAS MORE POTENTIAL ENERGY THAN THE FEATHER BECAUSE IT IS

MORE MASSIVE.
The more mass an object has, the more potential energy
it has.
If I want to drop an apple from the top
of one of these three things, where will
be the most potential energy?

A B C
A

ANSWE
R:higher the object,
The
the more potential energy!
Potential Energy Converted
to Kinetic Energy
• The energy of a moving
object.
• "Kinetic" means
movement!
Kinet • When stored energy is
being used up, it is
ic making things move or
happen.
Examples of KineticEnergy
• The faster the object
moves, the more
kinetic energy is
produced.

• The greater the mass

and speed of an object,
the more kinetic
energy there will be.
When these objects move at the same
speed, which will have more kinetic
energy?
ANSWER:

The semi- truck has more

mass; therefore, more
kinetic energy!
NOTE:
• An object has the MOST kinetic energy when
it’s movement is the GREATEST.

• When an object has the LEAST potential

energy, it has the MOST kinetic energy.
NOTE:
• All energy is divided into two types:
potential and kinetic.
• Potential Energy: The energy stored in
an object.

• Kinetic Energy: The energy of a

moving object.

• Energy is never created or destroyed.

h = PE/mg
h= 145 J/ (5.8 kg) (9.8/)
h= 2.55 m
Calculate the kinetic energy of a 1000 kg car
traveling at 60 km/hr.

KE= ½ mv2
CONVERT FIRST!
KE= ½ (1000 kg) (16.67 m/s2 ) 2
KE= 138944.45 J
FOR 1. Calculate the kinetic
energy of a 1000-kg car
YOUR traveling at 60km/h?

WRITTEN 2. If a 0.2-kg ball is thrown

with a velocity of 6m/s,
WORK what is its KE?
3. What is the potential
energy of a 0.3-kg ball
lifted to a height of 5.0 m
above the ground?
4. A 1.5-kg book on top a shelf
has a PE of 29.4 J. How high
