PHOTOSYNTHESIS:
 Photosynthesis, the process by which green
plants and certain other organisms transform
light energy into chemical energy.
 Plant’s colour may vary depending on the
amount of light absorbed.

HOW PHOTOSYNTHESIS OCCURS? During photosynthesis in

green plants, light energy is
captured and used to convert
water, carbon dioxide, and

why is photosynthesis important for life on

earth?
Photosynthesis is a vital process for life on Earth because it:
•Produces oxygen:
Photosynthesis is responsible for almost all of the oxygen in the
atmosphere. This oxygen is essential for the survival of most
organisms.
•Provides energy
Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy that fuels
the metabolism of photosynthetic organisms. This chemical energy is
stored in organic compounds like sugars, glycogen, cellulose, and
starches.

•Forms the base of the food web

Photosynthetic organisms, like plants, algae, and cyanobacteria,
are primary producers that form the base of the food web. They are
consumed directly or indirectly by all higher life-forms.
•Maintains the carbon cycle
Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through diffusion
and use it to synthesize glucose. This process reduces the levels of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
•Purifies the air
Photosynthesis releases oxygen as a waste product, which helps
purify the air.
