Preparing
your
speech
Know Your Audience: Tailor your message to th
audience’s interests, age, and level of
understanding. Understanding who you’re speakin
to helps create a stronger connection.
• Organize Your Content: Start with a strong
introduction, followed by a clear body with main
points, and conclude with a memorable closing
statement.
a Using the “Tell them what you’re going
tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you
told them” structure works well.
• Practice: The more you practice, the more
confident you’ll feel. Rehearse in front of a mirror,
record yourself, or present to a small group to get
feedback.
BODY
Language
• Posture: Stand tall and confident, avoid slouching or crossing
your arms, which can appear closed-off. Keep your feet firmly
planted on the ground.

• Gestures: Use natural hand gestures to emphasize points, but

don’t overdo it. Keep them in line with your message.

• Eye Contact: Make eye contact with your audience. This helps
establish a connection and shows confidence. Don’t just look at
one person; try to engage with different parts of the room.

• Feet Position: Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and firmly

planted. This grounded stance prevents you from swaying and
helps project authority. Avoid shifting from foot to foot too much,
as this can be distracting.
• Eye Contact: Make regular eye contact with different parts of
the room. This helps create a feeling of connection. Avoid staring

Vocal delivery
• Pace and Pauses: Vary your speaking
speed. Slow down for important points and
use pauses for emphasis. Pauses also allow
the audience to process what you’ve said.
• Volume and Tone: Adjust your voice to
ensure you’re loud enough to be heard, but
vary your tone to keep the audience
interested. A monotone voice can cause
the audience to lose interest.
• Clarity and Diction: Speak clearly and
articulate your words. Avoid mumbling or
speaking too quickly.
