The past simple tense is used to describe
actions that were completed in the past. It’s
one of the most common tenses in English,
used to tell stories, talk about past events,
and describe facts or habits that occurred at a
specific point in the past.
Usage of the Past Simple
Tense
The past simple tense is used in the following
situations:
•Completed actions in the past:
• These are actions that started and finished at a
definite time in the past.
• Example: I watched a movie last night.
•A series of completed actions:
• We use the past simple to list events that
happened in sequence.
• Example: She entered the room, sat down, and
started reading.
•Habits in the past:
• It describes regular or repeated actions
that took place in the past but no longer
happen.
• Example: When I was a child, I played
soccer every weekend.
•Past facts or generalizations:
• Things that were true or generally believed
to be true at some point in the past.
• Example: People believed the Earth was
flat.

Affirmative (Positive) Form:
•For regular verbs, we add -ed to the base verb.

•For irregular verbs, the past simple form must be

•Example: I did not (didn't) eat breakfast this morning.

•Question Form:
•Use Did + subject + base verb.
•Example: Did you visit the museum last weekend?
Key Words and Time Expressions for the
Past Simple
Certain words and phrases are commonly used
with the past simple to indicate when an action
took place:
•Yesterday: I went to the park yesterday.
•Last (night, week, month, year, etc.): We
traveled to Spain last summer.
•Ago: She moved here two years ago.
•In (a specific year or time period): They met
in 2015.

Examples in Sentences

•Affirmative: She visited her grandparents last


weekend.

•Negative: They didn’t play football yesterday.

•Question: Did he finish his homework last


night?
 When the verb ends with (Y) before it a
VOWEL (A,E,I,O,U) we add (S) (Play – Played)
 When a verb ends with (Y) before it a
CONSONANT (21 letters) we cross out (Y)
and add (IEd)
 We add (ed) to any verb with Regullar Verbs

Irregular Verbs in the Past Simple
Unlike regular verbs, irregular verbs don’t
follow a fixed pattern. Some common irregular
verbs include:

•Go → went (She went to the store.)

•Take → took (He took the last cookie.)

•Have → had (We had dinner at 8 PM.)
