What is Item
Analysis?
Item Analysis
is a statistical technique
which is used for selecting
& rejecting the items of the
test on basis of their
difficulty value &
discriminated power
An item analysis
provides three kinds
of important
information about the
quality of test items.
It reveals;
1. Item
difficulty:
A measure of
whether an item was
too easy or too hard.
2 Item
discrimination:
A measure of whether an item

discriminated between students who

knew the material well and students who

did not
3. Effectiveness of
alternatives:
Determination of whether distractors

(incorrect but plausible answers) appear

to be identified by the less able students

and not by the more able students.

An item is difficult if majority


of learners are unable to provide
the correct answer.

examinees who score high in the test can

answer more items correctly than

examinees who got low scores

1. Score the test
2. Arrange the test papers from highest to lowest
3. Identify the upper and lower limits
4. Prepare a tally sheets
5. Convert the frequency to proportion
6. Compute for the difficulty index
7. Compute for the discrimination Index
8. Decide whether to retain, revise or reject the item
Large scale testing answer sheets are usually
scanned by a machine to capture test takers
item responses.

Manual scoring are often done for classroom


test where learner’s answers are checked
against prepared scoring key. They are
considered correct from multiple choice item
that match the scoring key and obtain
1 point credit.

maximize differences in
normal distributions while

Difficulty Index
The percentage of students taking
the test who answered the items
correctly.
The larger the percentage of
getting an item right, the easier the
item.
The higher the difficulty index, the
easier the item is understood. ( wood 1960)
