INTRODUCTION

We have started a bee farm with the trade name of Madhugaram. In

our NCAT farm, we have selected the following locations for placing
bee hives, coconut orchard, mango orchard, guava orchard and
ornamental garden. We have bought 14 bee hive boxes along with
queen and worker bees
OBJECTIVES OF BEE KEEPING

Production of honey throughout the country

Increase the production of crops, fruits, seeds and vegetables by
honey bee pollination
Increase the nutrition value of human food
Develop bee products by way of bee keeping
Develop plant environment through plantation for keeping bees
Create employment opportunity
SCOPE OF BEE KEEPING IN OUR FARM

• Increase in crop yield by pollination

• In mango, without pollination the yield and quality are too less.
Thus there is significant increase in yield obtained in bee pollination
by 30% and it gives both pollen and nectar source for bees
• As the coconut trees blooms, they produce flowers with tightly
packed pollen and nectar. It is the best food source for bees
• By bee pollination, it significantly enhanced the length, diameter
and weight of fruits and total soluble sugar in guava.
Type of bee hive – Marthandam bee hive

• Top cover
• Super chamber
• Brood chamber
Brood chamber

It contains entrance at the bottom

Breeding of honey bees takes place
Contains eggs, larvae, pupa and 30% honey & pollen to feed young
bees
It consists of 5 frames
Honey should not be harvested from this chamber
Super chamber

• The super chamber is also known as honey chamber

• It consists of only honey without eggs and larvae of bees
• If enough bee flora is available the super chamber will be filled with
honey within 25 days
• Once each cell is filled with honey, bees prepare wax and seal each
cell to prevent from exposing to moisture in air
Brood chamber Super chamber
Site selection
Site selection

• Abundance of nectar and pollen yielding plants within the radius of

about 1 – 1.5 km
• The site should not be exposed to strong winds
• The site should be flat with good drainage facilities
• Clean and fresh running water should be available to the bees
• A young orchard is an ideal choice
Resources in our apiary site
• Bees feed on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy
source and the later for protein and other nutrient
• In our college 60 flowering plants are there for bee’s forage
purposes

BEE HIVE INSTALLATION
INDIAN BEES – Apis cerana indica
• They make multiple parallel combs on trees and cavities in darkness
• The bees are larger than Apis florea but smaller than Apis mellifera
• They produce about 5 kg of honey per year per hive
• They are more prone to swarming and absconding
• They are native of India or Asia
HIVE INSPECTION
Opening the hive atleast twice a week and inspecting for following
details

Presence of queen
Presence of eggs and brood
Honey and pollen storage
Presence of bee enemies like wax moth, mite and diseases
SEASONAL MANAGEMENT
During rainy season

Avoid dampness in apiary site

Provide proper drainage
Cover the hives with polythene or plastic sheets to avoid the entry
of rain water
PEST MANAGEMENT
• Check often, every 2-3 months
• Conduct a random inspection of hives
• Placing cup of water on leg of hives stand to control ant movement

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS
A. FIXED COST QUANTITY COST/PIECE COST IN Rs.

1 Cost of 14 boxes with super and queen 14 2200 30800

2 Cost of bee veils 2 250 500

Total 31300

B. VARIABLE COST QUANTITY COST/PIECE COST IN Rs.

1. Transport cost 400 5600

2. Containers for honey sale 10 20 200

Total 5800

Unit cost A + B = 31300 + 5800

= 37100
S. No Particulars Yield Cost/kg Total yield
( for 14 boxes) (In duration of 2
months)
1 Honey ( kg ) 10kg 1000 10000

2 Wax ( kg ) 1.5kg 500 750

3 Honey candy 50 10 500

4 Honey amla 2kg 250 500

Total 11750
BC RATIO
BCR = Total income / total cost
= 11750 / 37100
~ 0.316

INFERENCE
For the initial few months there will be no profit but in the
successive harvest we can get income more than the initial cost. So the profit will
be attained in the successive phase.
CONCLUSION

Usually in Ramanathapuram district we have higher temperature so

that we cannot get high yield of honey as soon as possible. Inspite of
getting yield in 25 days, the yield is harvested in 40 days. To overcome
all the constraints, we have to grow more trees and plants that yields
high amount of nectar and pollen
