transfer of files
Transfer by a local area network (LAN) to your
station. Scanned into the computer system by means of an optical character reader.
Transferred from station to station over telephone
lines with the aid of a modem, which converts signals at either end.
Brought in from a different word processing program
and made compatible by means of a conversion utility. Transferred between two computers via a serial cable. Received in ASCII format so that the text is readable but has the specific attributes and formatting codes stripped out. proofreading
There are several reasons for proofreading
at the initial stage of creation:
The word processing program contains a
spellcheck utility that contains a main dictionary and a customized user dictionary.
The operator with the original source
material should be the one to read for meaning since omitted words and substitutions will not be oicked up by the spellcheck. The word processing program contains a search-and-replace utility that is extremely useful in text editing. pi characters
PI CHARACTERS are specialized characters usually
accessed in word processing or layout programs by using certain combinations of shift, control, or command keys and keyboard characters. Ex. bullet, ellipsis, single and double quotes, and em and en dashes. Here are some suggestions for substituting and using pi characters:
• Use bullets instead of asterisks or colored-in
lowercase o‘s before listed items. • Use the special ellipsis key where available instead of typing three periods to indicate the intentional omission of words. (On many PC programs, enter the international code number for the character on the numeric keypad while you hold down the Alt key.) • Use the real directional single quotes (‘) instead of the apostrophe key (‘) pi characters
• Use the more professional looking directional
quotes (“ “) as opposed to the straight quote marks or inch symbol (“). • Use the em or en dash instead of double hyphens. In books and newspapers, there is never a break in a dash. The em dash is the width of an M and the en dash is the width of an N. word publishing programs
