ARTICLE – 1: READING VISUALIZATIONS FOR BEGINNERS

ARTICLE - 2: THE 5 MOST INFLUENTIAL DATA VISUALIZATIONS OF
ALL TIME
ARTICLE -1: Reading Visualizations
For Beginners
Learning Objective

• To understand what is data visualization

• Describe the importance of data visualization for business intelligence
and decision-making
• Use data visuals to convey distributions and relationships
• Use data visuals to convey trends in data over time
What is data visualization good for?

• Financial Analysis: Line
charts are often used to
analyze stocks, currencies,
and other financial data
over time.
• Weather Forecasting: Line
charts are used to chart the
temperature, humidity, and
other weather-related data.
• Market Research: Line
charts are used to analyze
trends in customer
preferences, spending
habits, and other market
data.
Comparisons

Visualization methods that help show the

differences or similarities between values.
Addinga comparison value will offer
more meaning and bring more value to the
data.
Comparisons across time periods - show
improvement or regression.
Direct comparisons - two or more entities
to be compared to each other.

Find a starting point

• Focus on a small piece of the picture.

• Helps to understand the data better and helps
with viewing the dimensions and metrics of the
chart.
• Can give context on how the small piece of
data fits into the entire dataset.
Turn data into
words
• Very useful to be able to
convert the data into a
familiar language.

• Do not need to instantly

recognize or understand the
meaning of the visualization
before converting it into
words.
The Main Outcomes :

 Understood the importance of visualizing data

 We have learnt different types of visualizations
 We have learnt how to effectively read and interpret visualizations
 We have learnt tips for creating effective visualizations

ARTICLE -2: The 5 most influential
data visualizations of all time
Learning Objectives

 It is important for readers to understand that historical data visualizations can help them
comprehend how a certain statistic or occurrence has changed over time.
 The reader should comprehend that plotting data across time can be used to highlight
probable causal linkages and reveal correlations between various variables.
 The reader should be aware that displaying data across time can serve to clarify difficult
material and make it easier for a wider audience to access and comprehend.
5 most influential data visualizations of all time

 Chart of biography – Joseph Priestley

 War mortality – Florence Nightingale
 March on Moscow – Charles Minard
 Gapminder – Rosling
 London cholera map – John Snow
Chart of biography – Joseph Priestley

 Joseph Priestley, an English

educator and polymath who
lived in the 18th century, set
out to teach his students
about the connection between
historical nations and the
individuals who defined them.
 Two distinct but linked views
were ultimately produced by
his work. From the first, which
features nearly 2000 historical
figures, here is a brief excerpt.
Chart of Biography – Joseph Priestley

The complete visualization is

massive and far too big for this
format.
When combined with the
second component of his two-
part visualization, this viz
becomes even more
spectacular because we can still
learn from it on an overall basis.
Chart of Biography – Joseph Priestley

This visualization displays the

history of the world's major
civilizations over the same time
span using the same X-axis as
the biography chart.
Chart of Biography – Joseph Priestley

 They create a complex story

together. They explain and
describe the emergence and
fall of empires as well as the
distinctive minds that shaped
those countries.
 For instance, take note of the
biographical clusters and
how they link to the key eras
in human history, such as the
Greeks, Romans,
Enlightenment, etc.
War Mortality – Florence Nightingale

In 1855, Britain fought a battle

with Russia and disease.
Florence Nightingale, being a
nurse wanted the army to invest
more in hospitals and healthcare
than in guns and ammunition.
She gathered data and learned
that poor sanitary practices were
the main culprit of high mortality
in hospitals. Using applied
statistical methods, she made a
case to eliminate the practices
that contributed to the unsafe
and unhealthy environment. Her
work in statistics saved lives.
March on Moscow – Charles Minard

Napoleon marched to Moscow in

1812 to conquer the city. 98% of
his soldiers were killed. Fifty years
later, as his country yearned for
its former Imperial glory, Parisian
engineer Charles Minard chose
data to remind his country of the
horrors of war. The simple but
fascinating temperature line
beneath the viz demonstrates how
cold eventually defeated
Napoleon's army. This viz
continues to make viewers
consider the true cost of war.
Gapminder – Rosling

Hans Rosling, a Swedish scientist, had been working

with developmental data for over 30 years, but it took a
great visualization and a TED talk in 2007 for him to
share his passion with the rest of the world.
His first (of many) visualizations depicts the
relationship between income and life expectancy. The
data is simple, but Rosling's visual narrative has
enabled him to share his enthusiasm for this
fascinating, underappreciated data with millions of
others.
London Cholera Map – John Snow

1854 , cholera strikes London.

500 people killed in 10 days in a single
neighbourhood.
The source is undefined.
 John snow, epidemiologist , realised water supply was
spreading the disease.
Plotted every death on a map.
Discovered there were greater number of deaths near
the Broad street water pump.

Learning Outcomes

 Complex data sets may be simpler to study and interpret if they are visualized. This is
particularly valid for data sets with a lot of variables or for sets that accumulate a lot of
data over time.
 Involvement and interest in the supplied data can be raised by using historical data
visualizations. This is due to the fact that, in contrast to conventional approaches like
spreadsheets or tables, visualizations frequently offer a more intuitive and dynamic
manner of comprehending data.
 Finding links and trends that can help guide decision-making can be made easier by
visualizing data over time. In areas where data-driven decision making is essential, such
as business and public policy, this can be especially helpful.
