What is ICT?

ions
Technology
Information and Communications
Technology
- refers to the
technologies, both
hardware and software,
that enable humans to
communicate with one
another.
What are the events that
led to the current
technologies, processes,
and techniques used in
ICT?
EVOLUTION OF ICT
There are Four Main Periods in History that
divide the era of ICT that greatly affect our lives.
1. PREMECHANICAL PERIOD – 3000 BCE to 1450 CE

2. MECHANICAL PERIOD – 1450-1840

3. THE ELECTROMECHANICAL PERIOD – 1840-1940

4. ELECTRONIC PERIOD – 1940’s to present

PREMECHANICAL PERIOD – 3000 BCE to 1450 CE

• Humans communicated using words and pictograms

curved in rocks
• Started to write symbols as substitute for pictures to
depict ideas, object and animals that gave rise to our
modern day alphabet.
• Used stone tablets but realized these are too heavy
and bulky

PREMECHANICAL PERIOD – 3000 BCE to 1450
CE
• Created books which led to the creation of
Libraries, considered the first data centers
in history.

• Later discovered numerical system that

lead to the discovery of the most popular
device created in this period believed to
have come from China – the abacus.

ABACUS
first device to
process
information. It is a
manually operated
device similar to
the calculator.
MECHANICAL PERIOD – 1450-1840

PASCALINE
a mechanical
calculator is
the highlight of
this period,
invented by
Blaise Pascal
along with
Wilhem
MECHANICAL PERIOD – 1450-1840

• Interest in automating and speeding

numerical calculations grew

• The machines driven by mechanical means

such as steam and gears dominated
information processing and calculation.
MECHANICAL PERIOD – 1450-1840
ANALYTICAL
ENGINE

first
programmable
mechanical
computer
invented by
Charles Babbage,
a mathematician.
Who is the
“Father of
Computers”?
CHARLES BABBAGE is
known as the father of the
computer because he was
the first to invent the
Analytical Engine, which led
to the invention of the
modern-day computer.

The Analytical
Engine consisted of an
Arithmetic Logic Unit or ALU,
an integrated memory, and
a basic flow control
THE ELECTROMECHANICAL PERIOD – 1840-
1940

•The use of electricity for handling and transfer

bloomed.
THE ELECTROMECHANICAL PERIOD – 1840-1940
TELEGRAPH
first electrical
communications device
invented by William
Cooke and Sir Charles
Wheatstone in 1837.
The first model used five
magnetic needles that
could be pointed around
sets of letters and
numbers by using
electric current.

Used to transmit
information over long
distances, coded in
THE ELECTROMECHANICAL PERIOD – 1840-1940

Samuel Morse
successfully
developed the first
single-circuit
electric telegraph
which gave rise to
Morse Code. (1844)
Alexander Graham Bell
was granted patent for the
telephone using copper wires
to transmit sounds. (1876)

The invention of telephone by

Alexander Graham Bell, followed by
telecommunications network,
composed of wires and equipment
that expanded through the globe
initiated the technologies and
methodologies now collectively
referred to as information and
communications technology or ICT.
THE ELECTROMECHANICAL PERIOD – 1840-1940
The Bombe was
invented by Alan
Turing and was
improved by Gordon
Welchman was a
device used to
decipher the code that
was generated by a
similar German
encryption machine,
the Enigma, during
World War II. (1939)
ELECTRONIC PERIOD – 1940’s to present
Electronic Numerical
Integrator and
Computer (ENIAC) the
first electronic and
general purpose
computer, marked a
revolutionary period in
computing. This
machine occupied
167sq meters and the
processing speed is
lower.
ELECTRONIC PERIOD – 1940’s to present

•1947 – the transistor was invented that is similar to vacuum

tubes. This is the foundation of every electronic device today
and you can find a transistor for every electronic device.
•1957 – first full transistor computer was developed that was
faster than vacuum computers.
ELECTRONIC PERIOD – 1940’s to present
Integrated Circuit (IC)
introduced by American
Electrical Engineer Jack
Kilby.
Integrated Circuit is a
device that is composed of
a group of transistors and
circuit elements
compressed in a single
package. The IC was then
integrated in a chip
resulting in faster
operating speed.
ELECTRONIC PERIOD – 1940’s to present
First commercial
computer sold in
1965 designed in
Italy by Pier
Giorgio Perotto
and his team, the
Olivetti
Programma 101.
(1965 )
ELECTRONIC PERIOD – 1940’s to present
August 1981 – IBM
5150,the very unit
which had set the
standards for several
PC platforms today
developed by IBM
Entry Systems
Division Team led by
Don Estridged.
ELECTRONIC PERIOD – 1940’s to present
For decades, Scientists and
engineers developed
methods of connectivity for
sharing processed
information stored in
computers and processing
devices.

The result of this is the

interconnection of
computer devices and
equipment we enjoy today.
This network is commonly
known as the Internet of
the WORLD WIDE WEB.
WORLD WIDE WEB • Is a system that enables
you to access hypertext
documents and other files over
the internet.

• Proposed by Tim Berners-

Lee in 1989
Present composition of the ICT Network – fusion of
1. Hardware equipment
2. Precise Software
3. Graphical User Interface (GUI)
The graphical user interface, or GUI, is a form of user
interface that allows users to interact with electronic
devices through graphical icons and audio indicators such
as primary notation, instead of text-based UIs, typed
command labels or text navigation.

4. Effective Communications Network

WORLD WIDE WEB
WEB 1. 0 – Read-Only Web
•The information or hypertext files is accessed by
the user.
•There were no facilities to interact with it other
than read or view the content.

WEB 2. 0 – Read-and-Write Web

•Enabled users or viewers to edit the content of the
files they were accessing.

WEB 3. 0 – Semantic Executing Web

•Envisioned to be a smarter access of hypertext
files and a version that would enable a wider range of
search in a fast manner.
SOCIAL MEDIA
•High impact user
application

•Started with Web 2.0

•Used in
communicating and
socializing with other
application users in
virtual communities and
networks.

•Allows users to create

and exchange user-
generated information.
VIRALITY
The effectiveness of a social
media application can be
measured by its virality which is
defined as the rate of reposting
or sharing of photos, pieces of
information, or ideas published in
one’s social media profile or
page.

MAIN BENEFACTORS OF VIRALITY

• Businesses, nonprofit
organizations, and special
interests groups that use online
marketing and campaigns
through social media sites.
