OBJECTIVE
• The objective of this project is to design an
automated solar street light system that runs on solar
energy. It turns on automatically at dusk and off at
dawn, without manual control.
• The system adjusts the brightness based on ambient
light and motion detection. It aims to save energy and
reduce electricity costs. The system also allows for
remote monitoring to ensure efficient operation.
ABSTRACT
This project presents an automated solar street light system that utilizes solar
energy to power street lights. The system automatically turns on at dusk and off at
dawn, ensuring energy efficiency without manual intervention. It incorporates light
and motion sensors to adjust the brightness of the lights based on environmental
conditions and movement, saving energy. The system is powered by a solar panel
that charges a battery, which stores energy for use at night. A microcontroller, such
as the ESP32, manages the system’s operations, while a communication module
enables remote monitoring. This solution reduces electricity costs, minimizes carbon
emissions, and improves public safety. It is an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and
sustainable solution for modern street lighting.
Existing
System
1. Limited Energy Efficiency : Basic solar street lights rely on simple PWM charge
controllers and may not capture the maximum possible energy, especially in cloudy
conditions. This leads to inefficient battery charging and reduces the overall system
performance.
2. Lack of Remote Monitoring : Most existing systems do not have remote access,
requiring manual checks for performance, battery health, and faults. This increases
maintenance efforts and downtime, as issues may not be detected until they cause
a failure.
Proposed
System
1. Enhanced Energy Efficiency with MPPT : The proposed system uses MPPT charge
controllers, which maximize the energy captured from the solar panel, especially under
variable sunlight conditions. This leads to better battery charging and more efficient use of
solar energy.
2. Real-Time Monitoring and Fault Detection : The ESP32 microcontroller enables
remote monitoring via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing users to track battery status, energy
consumption, and performance. It also provides real-time fault detection and alerts,
reducing downtime and improving system reliability.
