THE
LUNAR
ECLIPSE
Understanding the Lunar Eclipses
WELCOME TO
SPACE!
HEY THERE, AMAZING STUDENTS!
Welcome to your Earth and Space Science class – the
cosmic adventure begins! I'm Rosa Aguado, and I'm
thrilled to be your guide on this journey of exploring the
wonders of the universe.

Get ready to discover the mysteries of lunar eclipses!

We will explore the complex relationships between light
and shadow in this session, revealing the amazing
things that occur in our night sky. Come along with me
as we explore lunar eclipses together on this celestial
voyage!
LESSON 01
KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION
Know the mechanisms underlying lunar

eclipses, particularly the precise alignment of
the Sun, Earth, and Moon leading up to this
astronomical event.

02
CONCEPTUAL
UNDERSTANDING
Distinguish between complete, partial, and
penumbral lunar eclipses, and learn about how
Earth's shadow is involved in each kind.

03
APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE

Illustrate and explain the various phases of a

lunar eclipse through a hands-on exercise and
group presentations.
TO THE
LAUNCH PAD!
AFTER KNOWING ABOUT SOLAR
ECLIPSES PREVIOUSLY, WE WILL
BE DISCUSSING LUNAR ECLIPSES.

• As a review, how does an eclipse happen?

• Describe how a solar eclipse happens.
• How many types of solar eclipses are there? Can
you differentiate one from the others?
• Are you familiar with the lunar eclipse? How do
you think lunar eclipses happen?
LET‘S REVIEW
SHADOWS
A SHADOW IS FORMED WHEN AN
OBJECT OBSTRUCTS THE PATH OF
LIGHT.
Shadows are the dark shapes that are made when
something blocks the light from a bright source, like
the Sun or a lamp.

When an object gets in the way of the light, it creates

a shadow on the surface behind it. Shadows look
darker because they don't have as much light as the
areas around them.
Penumbra

DEFINING
ECLIPSE
AN ECLIPSE OCCURS WHEN ONE
CELESTIAL BODY PASSES THROUGH
THE SHADOW OF ANOTHER CELESTIAL
BODY.
An eclipse is a celestial event in which one astronomical
body, such as a planet or moon, passes into the shadow of
another celestial body, causing a temporary reduction or
complete obstruction of light.

On Earth, the most common types of eclipses are solar

eclipses, where the Moon passes between the Sun and
Earth, and lunar eclipses, where Earth comes between the
Sun and the Moon.
TYPES OF ECLIPSE

SOLAR ECLIPSE LUNAR ECLIPSE

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes A lunar eclipse takes place when Earth comes
between the Sun and Earth, blocking or partially between the Sun and the Moon, causing
blocking the Sun's light. This can result in a Earth's shadow to be cast on the lunar

LUNAR
ECLIPSE
A LUNAR ECLIPSE OCCURS WHEN
THE EARTH COMES DIRECTLY
BETWEEN THE SUN AND THE
MOON.
This celestial event can only take place during a full
moon when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned in a
straight line, with the Earth in the middle. The Moon
moves into the Earth's shadow, leading to a
temporary dimming or darkening of the lunar surface.

There are three types of lunar eclipses: penumbral

lunar eclipses, partial lunar eclipses, and total lunar
eclipses.

A PORTION OF THE MOON MOVES

INTO THE EARTH'S UMBRA.
A portion of the Moon moves into the Earth's umbra,
the central and darker part of its shadow.

This results in a partial darkening of the lunar

surface as only part of the Moon is obscured. This is what you see from earth.

The entire Moon moves into the Earth's umbra,
leading to a total darkening of the lunar surface.

The Moon passes through the Earth's penumbra, the
