CHAPTER 2

WORK
BREAKDOWN
STRUCTURE
WORK BREAKDOWN
STRUCTURE
 The WBS is described as a hierarchical structure
which is designed to logically sub-divide all the
work-elements of the project into a graphical
presentation.
 The full scope of work for the project is placed at
the top of the diagram, and then sub-divided
smaller elements of work at each lower level of the
breakdown.
 At the lowest level of the WBS the elements of work
is called a work package. A list of project’s activities
is developed from the work packages.
 Effective use of the WBS will outline the scope of
the project and the responsibility for each work
package.
WORK BREAKDOWN
STRUCTURE
 It should be borne in mind that once
the breakdown is exhaustive,
operations such as resource allocation,
project monitoring, etc become
simplified
 The following illustrative example
shows the ‘whole to part’ relation
between the project , sub- projects,
tasks, work packages and activities for
the construction of a hospital complex.
WORK BREAKDOWN
STRUCTURE
 To visualize the WBS, consider the following Figure which
shows a three level house construction project.
WORK BREAKDOWN
STRUCTURE
 level 1 represents the full scope of work for the
house.
 In level 2, the project is sub-divided into its
three main trades, and
 in level 3 each trade is sub-divided to specific
work packages.

project WBS is divided into four levels:

Gantt (Bar) Chart

 The bar chart is graphical

representation of project schedule
 They are easy to understand and
very useful in reviewing progress.
 Itis one of the oldest methods
and an effective technique for
overall project planning.
Gantt (Bar) Chart

 They give an idea of duration of

activities / project and hence can be
useful in preparing strategy for working.
 In a bar chart the activities are shown
as horizontal bars on a horizontal time
scale, where the start and end locations
of the bars coincide with the start and
finish dates of the activities.
 A bar chart representation of the
illustrative example given in Figure
