DEFINITION
Historical Criticism Approach
analyzes literary text within
their historical
context,examining the social,
cultural, political, and
economic conditions that
influenced the texts creation,
reception, and interpretation.
PROPONENTS OF HISTORICAL
LITERAL CRITICISM:

 Johan David Michaelis(1717-1791)


- Often considered one of the
earliest proponents of historical
context of biblical texts. He argued
that that the literal meaning of
scripture should be interpreted in
light of its historical circumstance
FERDINAND CHRISTIAN
BAUR(1792-1860)
- A German theologian and
philosoper, Baur contributed on
hostirocal criticism by focusing
on the historical development of
early Christian texts. Though
more aligned with historical
maternalism, his work
influenced texts within their
 RICHARD SIMON(1638-1712)
- A French priest often reffered to as
the father of modern biblical
criticism, Simon applied a historical-
critical method to the Bible, focusing
on its historical context and the
intent of the authors. His approach
laid the groundwork for later literal
and historical readings of biblical
texts.
 G.E LESSING(1729-1781)
- A German philosopher,
lessing was critical of using
allegorical interpretations of
biblical texts, favoring
instead an approach that
looked at the literal sense as
shaped by historical realities
BREVARD CHILDS(1923-2007)
- A more contemporary
figure,Childs was a scholar of
the old Testement who
advocated for a literal
interpretation of biblical text
while considering the historical
context. his
work often stive to balance
historical-critical methods with
theological reflection
E.P. SANDERS(1937-PRESENT)
-While primarily known for his
work on Second Temple Judaism
and the apostle Poul, Sanders
utilized historical criticism to
interpret christian texts in their
literal and historical context,
emphasizing the importance of
understanding the invironment
in which these texts were
produced
HOW IS IT USED
The historical approach examines
events,ideas, of phenomena within their
their historical context to understand their
development and impact on the present and
it is used in:

1.History: Reconstructing past events


through primary and secondary sources.
2.Literature: Exploring how historical
contexts influence themes and works.

3.Social Sciences: Tracing societal


changes over time.

4.Education: Understanding how


history shaped educational system.
5.Art and Culture: Analyzing how historical
events influenced artistic and cultural
expressions

This methods involves identifying

data,analyzing sources, and
interpreting findings to connect
past and present.
The historical approach analyzes texts or
events by examining their historical
context, including the time period, the
creator’s background, and how it was
received by its audience. it looks at how the
subject evolved over time and compares it
to similar works from the same era to
understand its significants. This method
helps reveal the deeper meaning and
relevance of the sublect in its original
context
