Living
& Non-living Living vs. Non-Living Things
● There are living things around
us, like plants and animals.
● Non-living things include rocks
and computers.
● Can you think of examples of
each? Who Studies Living Things?
● Scientists called biologists study living things.
● They help us understand what makes something alive. Rule #1: All living things move (MOVEMENT)
● Animals move around to get
from place to place.
● Plants grow and turn towards
the light. Rule #2: All living things breathe (RESPIRATION)
● Plants and animals use oxygen
in the air to turn the food they eat into energy.
● Plants breathe through their
leaves.
● Animals breathe through their
cells. Rule #3: Living Things Respond to Their Environment (SENSITIVITY)
● Living things react to changes
around them.
● When it's cold, animals shiver.
● Plants turn or grow toward the
sun, this is called tropism. Rule #4: Living Things Grow and Change (GROWTH)
● Living things grow and change over time.
● Just like you grew from a baby to now! Rule #5: Living things make more of themselves (REPRODUCTION)
● Living things can make more of
themselves, this is called reproduction. ● Animals have babies, and plants make seeds. ● Can you name some baby animals? Rule #6: Getting rid of waste (EXCRETION)
● All living things must get rid of
waste from their body.
● Plants and animals get rid of
gas, water and solids.
● This is when you pass gas (fart),
urinate (pee) and defecate (pooping) !
DON’T BE EMBARRASSED, WE ALL
GO TO THE TOILET! Rule #7: Living Things Need Energy (NUTRITION)
● Living things need nutrition to
have energy to grow and move.
● Food is changed into energy.
● Green plants make their own
food using photosynthesis.
● You need energy to play and
learn! Explore the World Around You!
● Go outside and look for living
things!
● Are the leaves on the ground living
or not?
● Write down your findings in a table
in your workbook. You can also stick some leaves in your book!
