Introduction to computer
• A computer is an electronic device .
• It takes input , process it and produces meaningful output .
• Input is data and output is information
• It has many components like mouse , keyboard , printer ,
monitor ,speaker , etc.
• Speed Features
• Accuracy
• Diligence
• Automatic
• Storage
• Versatility
• Word length
• Reliable
• Banking. Application of Computer
• Education.
• Industries.
• Entertainments.
• Hospitals.
• Data processing.
Generation
• The Generations of tocomputer
of Computer refers the change in
technological advancement in the field of computers
from the birth of computers to the latest technology.
The generations are classified according to the
evolution of the technology from the beginning till
date.
1stofGeneration
• The main characteristics first generation of
computers (1940s-1950s)
• Main electronic component – vacuum tube.
• Main memory – magnetic drums and magnetic tapes.
• Programming language – machine language. Power –
consume a lot of electricity and generate a lot of heat.
2 nd
Generation
• The period of second generation was from 1959-
1965.
• In this generation, transistors were used .
• Smaller size as compared to first generation
computers .
• Consumed less electricity as compared to first
generation computers .
• Faster than first generation computers .
3 Generation
rd
• Third-generation computers used integrated circuits in
place of transistors.
• With the use of integrated circuits, these computers
became reliable, generated less heat, were small in
size, fast, very less maintenance, and were
inexpensive.
• It was developed in 1958 by Robert Noyce and Jack
Kilby.
• The fourth-generation4th
Generation
computers have
microprocessor-based systems.
• The fourth-generation computers use VLSI circuits.
• Improved speed, accuracy and reliability are seen.
• Refinement of the input/output devices seen.
5
• ULSI technology.
