NOTES

PART 1
1- HAMLET WILL ACCEPT THE TASK OF REVENGE
BUT IN HIS OWN TERMS. DISCUSS REFERRING TO HIS
PLAN (THE PLAY WITHIN A PLAY – MOUSE TRAP)

When Hamlet was full of doubts, he decided to make

sure that his uncle Claudius is the real murderer of his father.
So he asked some actors who came to entertain the king to
perform a scene that imitates the real murder of the king.
Hamlet was watching closely the reaction of Claudius when
the actors started to act the scene. Claudius became angry,
pretending to be ill and he left immediately. Thus, Hamlet was
sure that the story of the ghost is true and decided to take
revenge on Claudius.
2- HAMLET’S THIRD SOLILOQUY: (COMMENT)
“TO BE OR NOT TO BE, THAT’S THE QUESTION”

Hamlet’s Third soliloquy is the most important in the play, as it is the most
philosophical at all. In this soliloquy Hamlet reveals his mental debate and inner
conflict. Hamlet asks which of the two choices is nobler, whether to suffer silently the
guiltiness of fate or to put an end to his misfortunate life and commit suicide. It
would be better perhaps to commit suicide if it was a kind of sleep. But then Hamlet
thinks of death and afterlife. What if death doesn't end all the troubles? What if we do
not sleep in the death for eternity? The reason that prevents a man from committing
suicide is that he doesn’t know what is going to happen after death and that makes us
endure the bitterness and injustice of life. This creates the atmosphere for the
audience and prepares them for the actions that Hamlet will take later on.
“OH, MY CRIME’S RANK AND SMELLS TO
HEAVEN ............
HOW CAN I BE FORGIVEN WHEN I STILL HAVE
THESE?”

In his soliloquy, Claudius admits (confesses) that he has murdered his

brother King Hamlet. Up until this point in the play, we have had only the Ghost's
accusation of murder. Now we hear the revelation directly from Claudius himself.
Claudius then reveals that he cannot pray, despite his attempts, and imagines his
own hand “thicker than itself with brother's blood”. Claudius then reveals his
belief that he cannot be forgiven because he still has and keeps the things for which
he committed murder. (Claudius knows he should repent, but his passion to be a
king and his passion for Gertrude seem to control his emotions). Claudius believes
he cannot be forgiven without giving up these things and, as he has no intention of
giving them up, he asks the angels to help him and forgive him.
4- HAMLET’S FOURTH SOLILOQUY:

''OH HEART, DON’T LOSE YOUR NATURE; LET ME BE

CRUEL, BUT NOT UNNATURAL; I WILL SPEAK DAGGERS
TO HER, BUT USE NO SUCH WEAPONS; I WILL USE WORDS,
BUT NOTHING MORE.'' COMMENT

In a short soliloquy, Hamlet reveals his feelings

towards his mother as it is the time to confront her

with all her evil deeds. Hamlet also decided not to do

any physical harm to his mother but he will torture

her conscience by his own harsh words “I will speak

daggers to her, but use no such weapons”
