Compliance to NFPA 20

 100% Flow at 100%

Head.

 Maximum of 140% of
Head at Shutoff.

 Minimum of 65% of
Head at 150% of flow.

9
Four Fire Pump Categories

 Horizontal Split Case

 End Suction
 Vertical Turbine
 Vertical In-line

10
Horizontal Centrifugal
Pumps

End suction pump

 Generally used when capacities are low.
 More economical than split case pumps.
 Impeller overhung design leads to larger deflections on shafts
than comparable split case designs.
11
End Suction
50-500 GPM, 50-216 PSI

12
Horizontal Centrifugal
Pumps

Split case pump

 Generally used when capacities are high.
 Enable to split pump casing for easy maintenance.
 Minimal maintenance.
 Efficient operation.
13
Horizontal Split Case
750-1500 GPM, 101-280 PSI

14
Vertical In-line

15
Vertical Turbine
 The use of vertical turbine pumps is for installation
where water sources are below ground level.
 Standard surface discharge assembly is cast iron and
designed to support the driver as well as the pump
column pipe.
 Column pipes are flanged for ease of assembly /
disassembly and the length does not exceed 10 ft.
 Line shafts, bowl shafts and couplings are constructed
of stainless steel.
 Bowl assemblies are cast iron with bronze impellers.
 Basket strainer is stainless steel and limits passage of
solids larger than 1/2” sphere.

19
Materials of Construction
• Casing Cast Iron: with suction and discharge gage ports, renewable
bronze casing wearing rings, seat flush connection, drain plug,
flanged suction and discharge.
• Impeller: Bronze double suction fully enclosed, balanced and keyed
to shaft.
• Bearings: Grease lubricated ball bearings, replaceable without
opening casing.
• Shaft: Alloy steel with replaceable bronze shaft sleeve.
• Seal: Packing gland with minimum four rings graphite impregnated
packing and bronze lantern rings, 230 degrees F maximum continuous
operating temperature.
