TIETGEN KOLLEGIET, DENMARK

INTRODUCTION
• Tietgen kollegiet named for Danish financier C.F. Tietgen is a
student residence located in the Ørestad district
of Copenhagen, Denmark.
• The building has a conspicuous circular shape, inspired by
traditional southern Chinese Hakka architecture, and is
designed by Danish architects Lundgaard & Tranberg in 2006.
• The design has won it a RIBA European Award.
• Architects: Lundgaard& Tranberg architects
• Area: 26515 m2
• Year: 2005
• Units: 360 rooms with each room having a bathroom, seven
floors with each floor having their own kitchen and living
room
• The project’s dynamic,
sculptural expression is
created by the contrast
of the building’s overall
form with the honest
expression of the
individual programmatic
elements.
• The building’s circular
form- symbol of equality
and the communal is
contrasted with
individual, projecting
volumes expressing the
individual residences.
• The principle inspiration
for the project is this
meeting of the collective
and the individual, a
characteristic inherent
to the dormitory building
type.
• The site is located
near copenhagen university in
ørestad north, a recently planned
neighborhood characterized by
flowing canals and a consistent, rigid
building structure.
• The simple circular form of the
tietgen dormitory is an urban
response to the context, providing a
bold architectural statement in the
newly planned area.

Ground floor plan
• The ground floor contains the dormitory bar,
gym, two crafts rooms, two music rooms (one
for bands, another with a grand piano), bicycle
parking (an absolute necessity in
copenhagen), laundry facilities and a computer
café.
• The remaining six floors each have five
corridors – or “kitchens”, as the residents refer
to them as – adding up to a total of 30
kitchens. Each kitchen has 12 student rooms,
of which 1-2 are allocated to international
students, giving internationals a distinct edge
in the application process.
• In the kitchens the residents hang out, cook
and party. Furthermore, each ‘kitchen’ has a
common room, which is open to any resident.
The common rooms each have a different
function, all centered around social interaction.
Common rooms include board game rooms,
projector screen cinemas and pool table
rooms, just to name a few.
• Tietgen is situated right next to the faculty of
humanities of the university of copenhagen, Different typology and how it fits
about 2,5 kilometers from the city center. The
metro is within walking distance, as are two

• In all rooms, one wall is clad with light
plywood panels that not only serve a
decorative purpose. Built into this
construction are a number of storage
lockers along the ceiling
• The rooms have a
spacious bathroom with floor heating,
toilet, and shower.

• At Tietgen kollegiet, 12 residences share one of
the total 30 spacious kitchens that are equipped
with tableware and kitchen utensils, 4 fridges, 2
cookers and one huge cooker hood that
contributes to a good indoor climate; even when
all the residents of the kitchen are cooking up a
storm.
• The residents also have individual lockers for
foodstuffs or extra kitchen utensils.
• The kitchens are furnished with big
dining room tables and the colored
chairs that can also be seen in other
areas of the residence hall. Over time,
the residents have contributed to
imbuing each kitchen with its own
personality by collecting sofas,
armchairs, and bookcases from various
sources – one particular kitchen has even
gotten its own bar! Many residents have
also equipped the kitchen with stereos
and TV.
• For each housing group, there is also an
extra room that the residents after
moving in decided to name the
common rooms.
• Even though the 30 common rooms are
linked to a residence group, the rooms pool
cinemas
are open for all residents and thus they
invite the residents to move around in
other places than their own kitchen.
• As each room has its own theme and
function, it also provides the
opportunity for access to a more varied
selection of facilities.
• This means that you in the common TV
rooms can find cinemas with projector
and surround sound, gaming room with
consol games, a board game
room, pool and table football, an
oriental lounge with pillows on the
floors, and an English Gentleman Room

• The facade is made with a
unique copper alloy and
features sliding partitions
inspired by traditional
southern Chinese Hakka
house architecture.
• The alloy keeps the building
surface clean and protected,
and it will age to a rich dark
tone over time, allaying
restoration needs in the
future.
• American oak and glass
partitions alternate
throughout the alloy wall,
creating an exciting and
dynamic facade that also
encourages the flow of fresh
air and sunlight.
