RECALL:
LAW OF RADICAL: #1
#
1

a. = = 𝑎
The nth principal root of a, raised to the power of n is
equal to a. If we rewrite the radical expression,
into its exponential form, it will be =𝑎.
Rules:
In simplifying radicals:
1) all perfect nth powers have been removed from the
radical
2) the index of the radical is as small as possible
3) no fractions are present in the radicand i.e. the
denominator has been rationalized

Rationalizing the denominator
eliminate the radical in the denominator

A radical expression is not considered in

simplest form when its denominator contains a
radical. The process of rewriting the quotient so
that the denominator doesn’t contain any radical
expression is called rationalizing the
denominator.
Rationalizing the denominator
eliminate the radical in the denominator

To rationalize the denominator,

we multiply the denominator by an appropriate
expression such that the product will be a perfect
nth root.
Rationalize the denominator:
1. Multiply the denominator by
appropriate radical expression

2. The denominator/product is
a perfect nth root.

3. Simplify the radicand.
