The politics of France take place with the
framework of a semi-presidential
system determined by the French
Constitution of the French Fifth Republic.
The nation declares itself to be an
"indivisible, secular, democratic, and
social Republic". The constitution provides
for a separation of powers and proclaims
France's "attachment to the Rights of
Man and the principles of National
Sovereignty as defined by the Declaration
of 1789".
Type of government
The political system of France consists
of an executive branch, a legislative
branch, and a judicial branch.
Parliament consists of the National
Assembly and the Senate. The
independent judiciary is based upon
civil law system which evolved from
the Napoleonic Codes.
History of France
 France was originally part of the
Roman Empire. However, it was
conquered by a Germanic tribe
known as the Franks in the late 5th
century AD.
 The original inhabitants of France
were a Celtic people known as the
Gauls.
 Clovis I, king of the Franks, is
generally considered to be the
founder of the French nation. It is
from the Franks that France gets
 The late 18th century saw the French Revolution
(1789-1799), a period of radical social and political
upheaval that led to the overthrow of the monarchy
and the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
 His reign ended with his defeat at the Battle of
Waterloo in 1815.
 France was heavily involved in World War I and World
War II.
 After World War II, France emerged as a key player in
European and global politics.
 France has a diverse and vibrant culture, known for its
contributions to art, literature, fashion, and cuisine.

 68% said they were happy, and 32% even
said they were "very happy" - despite serious
concerns about the rising cost of living and
the climate crisis.

20th happiest country worldwide.
Economy
 It is the world's seventh-largest economy by
nominal GDP, constituting around 4% of world
GDP.
 According to the International Monetary Fund
(IMF), in 2023, France was the world's 23rd
country by GDP per capita with $44,408 per
inhabitant.
 Paris, the capital of France, is a leading global
city, and has one of the largest city GDP in the
world. It ranks as the first city in Europe and 3rd
worldwide
 France is a major tourist destination, attracting
millions of visitors each year to iconic attractions
Is France well developed?
 France retains its centuries-long status as a global
center of art, science and philosophy. It hosts the fifth-
largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is
the world's leading tourist destination, receiving over
89 million foreign visitors in 2018.
 It remains a great power in global affairs, being one of
the five permanent members of the United Nations
Security Council and an official nuclear-weapon state.
 France is a founding and leading member of the
European Union and the Eurozone, as well as a key
member of the Group of Seven, North Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO), Organization for Economic Co-
operation and Development (OECD) and Francophonie.
