REMOTE SENSING AND GIS DEPARTMENT

RSG 303

SENSORS PRACTICAL
PROCEDURE
Outline
1. Acquiring Landsat data from GLOVIS
2. Download study area
3. Composite Bands
4. Landsat Mosaic
5. NDVI
6. Land use/land cover classification
1. Acquiring Landsat data from GloVis (USGS Global Visualization
Viewer )
What is GloVis? (http://glovis.usgs.gov/)
The USGS Global Visualization Viewer
(GloVis) is an online search and order
tool for selected satellite data.
Available Data:
Landsat 8-OLI, Landsat 7 ETM+,
Landsat 4/5 TM, Landsat 1-5 MSS, EO-
1 ALI, EO-1 Hyperion, MRLC, and Tri-
Decadal data sets, as well as Aster TIR,
Aster VNIR and MODIS browse images
from the DAAC inventory.
 Select Landsat data collection and navigate
1. Go to the GloVis website (http://glovis.usgs.gov/) i.e USGS EARHT EXPLORER
REGISTRATION
2. Click on login and create new account
3. Login with your created username and password
4.We are only interested in the Landsat data collection so Click Collection>Landsat Archive,
select from the drop down menu the desired landsat data collection
5. Now navigate to the area of interest by inserting the Path and Row (or Latitude/longitude)
of the desired location and click GO
 Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS)

Images consist of four spectral bands with 60 meter spatial resolution. Approximate scene size
is 170 km north-south by 185 km east-west (106 mi by 115 mi). Specific band designations
differ from Landsat 1-3 to Landsat 4-5.
* Original MSS pixel size was 79 x 57 meters; production systems now resample the data to 60
meters.
 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM)

Images consist of seven spectral bands with a spatial resolution of 30 meters for
Bands 1 to 5 and 7. Spatial resolution for Band 6 (thermal infrared) is 120 meters,
but is resampled to 30-meter pixels. Approximate scene size is 170 km north-south
by 183 km east-west (106 mi by 114 mi).
 Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+)
Images consist of eight spectral bands with a spatial resolution of 30 meters for
Bands 1 to 7. The resolution for Band 8 (panchromatic) is 15 meters. All bands
can collect one of two gain settings (high or low) for increased radiometric
sensitivity and dynamic range, while Band 6 collects both high and low gain for
all scenes. Approximate scene size is 170 km north-south by 183 km east-west
(106 mi by 114 mi).
 Comparing the differences to previous version of Landsat
 Date and Cloud Cover

The two main things to consider when downloading

Landsat data is the date and the % Cloud Cover
obscuring the satellite image
•The month and year of the available data can be
selected under Scene Information
•CC represents the cloud cover % and this can be
filtered from the drop down menu under Max
Cloud
•<10% of Cloud Cover is a good rule of thumb
 Add to Scene list and Register
After you find a landsat data image "scene", add this to your
"Scene List" by either Clicking Add on the bottom left or right
clicking the image and click Add To Scene List
•Once you have added all the images you want, Click Send to
Cart, this should open a new window requesting you to log in
to EarthExplorer
•If you don't have an account, click Register and fill out all the
required fields and confirm your registration
 Download your scene list
After registering, you may need to build your scene list again.
Click Send to Cart and it should take you to your Pending Scenes
To download either :
Click the Download icon above the red X to the right so you can directly
download your desired file
OR
Check the boxes under Bulk Download and/or Order (for those files
without Raw "Level 1 Product" data and Click Apply and click Go to
Item Basket
If you decided to use Bulk Download, you will receive an email for your
bulk download, and you will need to install the Bulk Download Application
(BDA)

• After downloading and installing BDA open the

application and login to your EarthExplorer account
• Select the order you want to download your files, and
choose the directory to save your downloaded files.
• Click Begin Download
 Study area map

1. Go to the following site

http://geocommons.com/home or http://www.diva-gis.org/
2. In the search box type the country name
3. Search and download the data in .shp file format
4. Save the data in the working drive
 Launch your software
Import .shp file i.e boundary study area into ArcGIS by navigate or
browse through your working folder that contains Data to be use.
Assignment 1

Use below Nigeria path and row to download MSS, TM, ETM or
ETM+ of a state.
Download from 1970 to 2023 with 10 years interval
Assignment II_CLASS WORK

In this exercise, you will use your downloaded

Landsat dataset:
1. Download and extract all the files
*All the .tif files are raster datasets
Compositing Bands
Download/extract your single-band raster data into desired folder
Open ArcGIS
*you can add the landsat raster files but not necessary as long as you know
where your files are located
•Open ArcToolBox>Data management>Raster>Raster processing>
Composite Bands
Compositing Bands
Click the "browse folder" button(red arrow in fig)
•Select and click Add to add the raster bands that
you would like to composite
•Click OK to composite
Your composited multi-band raster should look something like this:
