LEARNING OUTCOME
Students understand the definition of facility
planning
Students understand the facility planning scheme
Students understand the benefits of facility design
FACILITIES PLANNING DEFINED
Facilities planning (FP) determines how an activities tangible fixed assest best support achieving the
activity’s objective.

For a manufacturing firm, facilities planning involves the determination of how the
manufacturing facility best supports production.

For an airport, facilities planning involves determining how the airport facility is to
support the passenger-airplane interface.

For a hospital: How the hospital facility supports providing medical care to
patients.

For a Supply chain: How to locate the facility supports for the Flow of product

DISCUSSION
Each group give the example of the concerns problem
when building the specific business (20 min) (e.g., building
the small restaurants)
FACILITY PLANNING DESIGN
To stimulate your thoughts on the breadth of the facilities planning opportunity
ties, consider the following questions:
• What impact does facilities planning have on handling and maintenance costs?
• What impact does facilities planning have on employee morale, and how does
employee morale impact operating costs?
• In what do organizations invest the majority of their capital, and how liquid is
their capital once invested?
• what impact does facilities planning have on the management of a facility?
• What impact does facilities planning have on a facility's capability to adapt to
change and satisfy future requirements?
• What impact does facilities planning have on a facility's resilience, environ
mental impact, energy efficiency, and sustainability?
FACILITIES DESIGN
The determination of how the design components of a facility
support achieving the facility’s objectives

Structural design
Structural and enclosure
systems
Lighting, electrical,
communication systems
Life safety systems
Sanitation systems.
FACILITIES DESIGN
Facilities layout
 Consist of all
equipment,
machinery and
furnishongs within
the
building/facilities
Optimizize production layout can increase the
working satisfaction and boost firm profit
FACILITIES DESIGN
 Handling system
-Consists of
mechnishm need to
satisfy the required
facility interations,
FACILITY PLANNING
PROCESS
• Define the problem
• Analyze the problem.
• Determine the space requirements for all
activities
• Evaluate the alternatives.
• Select the preferred design
• Implement the design.
FACILITIES DESIGN
 Importance of Material Handling system

Improve the flow of material to produce production

cost

Improve the flow of material to reduce production

APPLLICATION
Reindustrialization
Employee health and safety
Service
• Restaurant
• Bank
• Airpot
• Entertainment location
• Logistic and distributiom
• Edicatopm
TYPE OF PROBLEM-
FACILITY PLANNING PROJECT
 Desgin the layout
 Improve the current layout
 Produce the new product
 Production explanation to adapt the increasing demand
 Redesign the system, the workplace
 Purchasing the new equipment
 Reduce the cost
 Redesign the distribution location
 Apply the new technology
OBJECTIVES OF FACILITIES PLANNING

• Customer satisfaction
• Return on assets (ROA)
– Maximize inventory turns
– Minimize obsolete inventory
– Maximize employee participation
– Maximize continuous improvement

• Speed for quick customer response

• Costs and supply chain profitability
• Organization’s vision
• Utilizations of people, equipment, space, energy.
• Return on investment (ROI) on all capital expenditures
• Adaptability and ease of maintenance
• Employee safety and job satisfaction
OBJECTIVES OF FACILITIES PLANNING

 Safety
 Improve service quality or product quantity
 Support for maintenance operation
 Efficiency control activities system operation
 Flexible, and easy to adapt to the changes,
 Increase production capacity
OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS
 One/multiple objectives
 Do they have any conflict
 What is the constraint
FACILITY LAYOUT PROBLEM
 It is a multi-objective optimization problem with many constraints and
many costs, benefits
 Can not have the best solution
 We seek the optimal solution
 We need to consider all of stakeholder perspectives
 Owner of the project
 Customer
 Supplier
 Staff

VIII. SUMMARY
• Determines how an activity’s tangible fixed assets should contribute to meeting the
activity’s objectives
• Consists of facilities location and facilities design
• Is part art and part science
• Can be approached using the engineering design process
• Is a continuous process and should be viewed from a life-cycle perspective
• Represents one of the most significant opportunities for cost reduction and
productivity improvement
