EVERYMAN
“A Morality Play”
GENERAL FACTS
- Everyman is a morality play,
which details the life and death of
the allegorical Everyman, who
embodies all of humanity.
- It was written in late 1400’s,
and is designed to teach its
audience a very specific message:
that people can only take their good
deeds with them into the afterlife.
THEMES
• Judgment and Death: Everyman's struggle to accept and
prepare himself for his imminent death and judgment reflects
human fears surrounding death.
• Value of Life: Though Christians believe in fostering
community, they ultimately face God alone, as individuals.
Consequently, one's way of life takes on enormous
importance.
• Religion: Everyman is a Christian allegory that reinforces the
idea that material possessions and earthly wealth do not matter
in the eyes of God; instead, people must live godly lives.
SETTINGS & TONE
Settings – The Action begins in
heaven when God send Death to
summon the main character,
Everyman. Thereafter the action
takes place on earth since the
author intended the main
character to represent every
human being, the action on earth
could take place anywhere.
Tone – Solemn and Dignified
EVERYMAN
- The Characters -
MESSENGER
- The first character to appear. The Messenger has no
role within the story of the play itself, but simply speaks the
prologue outlining what the play will be like.
Messenger: Greetings all, both old and young, forsake your
pride for it will deceive you in the end. Sins which feels so
sweet, but will cause your soul to weep at the end of days.
And when God calls your name there is no turning back.
Only those with clear account shall live in heaven. Pay
attention to our performance entitled “EVERYMAN”.
GOD
- God is the Christian creator figure, who is a trinity
composed of the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Angry
with the way humans are behaving on Earth, God
summons Death to visit Everyman and call him to
account.
God: What’s happening? All I see, everywhere I look, are
creatures who doesn’t think of me, who knows me as their
God. Look at them, all mankind are drowning in their sins
and blinded by their riches.
DEATH
- Death is commanded by God to go to Everyman
and bring him to judgment. Death takes pride in reaping
all people, no matter how powerful, and is frustrated that
Everyman hasn't considered his mortality more often.
Death: I’m Death. Hahahahaha!!!! I fear no man, I spare
no man and only God’s will that I’ll obey. Hahahahaha. I
care not for gold's or riches. I care not for emperors,
kings, dukes or princes, and I never will.
EVERYMAN
- Everyman is an allegory for humanity. He dresses in fine
clothes, and seems to have had led a wild and sinful life.
Throughout the course of the play, he is told that he is going to die
and undergoes a pilgrimage in which he absolves himself of sin, is
deserted by all of his friends apart from good deeds, and dies.
Everyman: This is it. My time has come to an end. Oh heavenly
God. Oh eternal Father, help me to redeem myself. Forgive me and
forgive my sins. I beg you to receive my prayers, though I may not
be deserving. Save me from the power of devil as death
approaches. I beg you, through your prayers, help me save my
soul.
FELLOWSHIP
- Represents friendship. Everyman's friend and
the very first one to forsake him. Fellowship
suggests going drinking or consorting with women
rather than going on a pilgrimage to death.
Fellowship: Hey everyman! How are you? Do you
have a problem? What is it? Tell us everything,
we’re your friends till the end of time.
KINDRED
- Kindred represents Everyman's family. He
promises to help Everyman but refuses to go with
him to God. 'Kindred' means 'of the same family', so
when Kindred forsakes Everyman, it represents
family members deserting him.
Kindred: In goodness and in bad, in sickness and in
health we will stand by you. Without a family, what
does a man have?
COUSIN
- Cousin is Everyman's relative, who pledges
his support but forsakes him when Everyman is
called by 'Cousin' means 'related', so when Cousin
forsakes Everyman, it represents family members -
and perhaps close friends - deserting him.
Cousin: What do you need? Tell us what you desire
and where you need to go? You know we live and
die together.
GOODS
- Goods is an allegorical character who represents
all of Everyman's wealth and possessions. Though
Everyman loves him best, when Everyman's goods
forsake him, the play is hammering home the fact that
you can't take belongings with you to the grave.
Goods: Your goods will steal your soul everyman.
You’re blinded by your riches and focus on material
goods. If you will love me, you cannot love God.
LUST

overconsumption of food or
anything to the point of
waste.

GREED
- Greed is an intense
desire and passionate love
for material wealth.

the time that goods will be
all mine. Wait, where is
goods? Isn’t she coming?
All I want is to be with her.
SLOTH
- Sloth is an excessive
laziness or the failure to act
and utilize one’s talents.

like doing anything. I just
want to lay in my bed. I just
want to sleep. Good night
y’all. Sweet dreams.
WRATH
- Wrath is a strong
anger and hate towards
another person.
Wrath: Arghhhh. I’m very
angry! Where are the
others, where are the other
sins in this world. So
annoying!!!
ENVY
- Envy is the intense
desire to have an item that
someone else possesses.
Envy: Ahm… Excuse me!
Excuse me! Is there anyone
of you! You! Or you! That
will take time to look at my
dress. It’s from Italy. And it’s
very expensive.
PRIDE
- Pride is an excessive
view of one's self without
regard for others.
Pride: All of you shut up!
Stop this nonsense
conversation. Try to be me.
Yes meeeee…… Thinking
of ways to promote our
country!
GOOD DEEDS
- Good Deeds represents Everyman's good actions
- nice things that he does for other people. Good Deeds
is the only character who does not forsake Everyman -
and at the end of the play, accompanies him to his grave.
Good-deeds: I will stay with you everyman, I will not
forsake you. You will find me a good friend in your time of
need. All earthly loves are nothing but vanity, all will
leave you eventually, all but your good-deeds.
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge is the sister of Good-Deeds and
represents the understanding of right and wrong. She
brings Everyman to confession and instructs him to
gather virtues about himself. 'Knowledge' is perhaps best
defined as 'acknowledgement of sin'.
Knowledge: Don’t cry. Rejoice! I will lead you to the right
path. Wear this garment which is wet with your tears. It
will protect you from pain and shows your sincere
remorse. It will please God.
CONFESSION
- Confession is described as a holy man. He gives
Everyman a penance that absolves his sins and frees Good-
Deeds to go with Everyman before God. Allows Everyman to
confess and repent for his sins.
Confession: Everyman, if you confess your sins in sorrow,
they will be forgiven. You must undergo a punishment in
order to wash the sin away. You must undergo pain to remind
you that God went through pain for you. You must undergo a
scourge to remind you that God was scourge for you.
BEAUTY
- Beauty is an allegorical character who
personifies earthly beauty. She is the first of
Everyman's virtuous friends to leave him, as she
would rot away if she followed him into the grave.
Beauty: I’m beauty! The beauty of every flowers,
the beauty of the sky and the beauty of our nature.
For I’m the beauty of everyman, inside and out.
STRENGTH
- Strength is an allegorical character
representing Everyman's physical strength. She
leaves him when he dies.
Strength: I’m strength! I’m the power of every
human being. I’m the source of everything that is
strong. I’m the strength of everyman and the power
of his body.
DISCRETION
- Discretion is an allegorical character who
personifies Everyman's ability to make wise
decisions. He leaves Everyman after Strength.
Discretion: If I’m the one to be asked, they call me
discretion. I represent the five senses, the music
and the imagination. I am the one who gives joy
and feelings to everyone.
FIVE WITS
- Five-Wits is an allegorical character who
represents Everyman's ability to perceive and
comprehend and who leaves him as he is dying.
Five Wits: Hello everyman! We are your five wits
that goes along with your mind and memory. We
have the reasoning power that every mankind
wants to have.
ANGEL
- The Angel is a heavenly being who announces
Everyman has been saved. Appears at the very end of
the play with Everyman's Book of Reckoning to receive
Everyman's soul.
Angel: Come to heaven you will go. Your soul is taken
from your body. Your account is crystal clear. Into
heaven you shall come and live well until the day of
doom. Everyman, you are now free and is now forgiven
with your sins.
Thank you for listening!
