OBJECTIVES

INTRODUCTION
• Nursing associations or professional
nursing organizations are groups that
provide a framework for nurses to work
together for the benefit of the profession
and the society.
• They perform a variety of functions such
as regulatory and professional roles.
• There are International and National
associations regulating the activities of
nurses.
American Nurses Association
(ANA) 1/2
• This is the premier organization that
represents the interest of millions of
registered nurses. Founded in 1896.
• They are active in ensuring improved
quality of health for all.
• Their mission is to “achieve a healthy
world through the power of nursing”.
American Nurses
Association (ANA) 2/2
Functions
• Fostering high standards of nursing
practice.
• Promoting a safe and ethical work
environment.
• Bolstering the health care and
wellness of nurses.
• Advocating on health care issues.
International Council of Nurses
(ICN) 1/2
• This is a federation of over one hundred and
thirty (130) national nurses associations,
representing more than 120million nurses
worldwide. Founded in 1899.
• Located internationally with the headquarters
in Switzerland.
• The goal of ICN is to unite nurse’s
organizations together worldwide and to
influence global and domestic health policy.

• Biennial congress where topics such as
socioeconomic welfare issues, leadership and
advanced practice issues are discussed.
Functions
• Quality nursing care for all.
• Ensuring sound health policies globally.
• Advancing nursing knowledge.
• Wellbeing of nurses and advocates for health
in all policies.
• Global health partnerships, leadership
development and expanding networks.
North American Nursing Diagnosis
Association (NANDA)
• This is a professional organization of nurses
that develops standardized terminologies for
nursing diagnoses. Founded in 1982.
Functions
• To standardize the language and procedures
used to develop nursing diagnoses.
• To conduct and fund research to refine nursing
diagnoses and outcomes.
• To develop standards in nursing care.
• Patient’s safety through evidence-based care.
Nursing and Midwifery Council
of Nigeria (NMCN) 1/5
• A parastatal of federal ministry of health
established by Decree No. 89, 1979.
• Goal is to promote and maintain excellence in
nursing education and practice in Nigeria.
• Registrar/Secretary general (Dr. Ndagi Al-
Hassan).
• NMCN is the only legal and administrative,
corporate and statutory body charged with
specific functions on behalf of the Federal
ministry of health.

• Designing, implementing and evaluating
nursing and midwifery educational
programmes in Nigeria.
• Indexing
• Curriculum development and review
• Collaboration with recognized bodies such as
NBTE, NUC, WHO etc.

Nigeria.

training.
• Revokes and restores professional certificates

National Association of Nigeria
Nurses and Midwives (NANNM)

trade union organization.
• Authorized to bring together all certified
professional nurses and midwives at all
levels of health care delivery system.
• Basically established to mediate between
the nurses, the public and the
government.

• Registers nurses and midwives for
membership to form a trade union.
• Provide a forum where nurses speak with one
voice.
• Promote the standard of services rendered by
nurses to the public.
• Planning, policy making and administration of
health care delivery services at all levels of
government.
• Unity among all members of the nursing
profession.

• Advocates for condition/schemes of service
that will enhance the dignity of the profession
and protect the interests of members.

• Uphold international code of nursing ethics as
enunciated by ICN and World Health
Organization.
• Affiliate with Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)
and fraternize with any other relevant
professional organizations with similar
objectives.
Conclusion
• Professional organizations are very
essential for the development, and
coordination of nursing practice, both
Nationally and Internationally.
