Using the Direct Method to Learn


Grammar
What is Direct and Indirect
Speech?
• Direct Speech: Quoting the exact words of the
speaker.
• Example: She said, “I am happy.”

• Indirect Speech: Paraphrasing or reporting


what the speaker said.
• Example: She said that she was happy.
Key Differences
• Direct Speech:
• - Uses quotation marks (“ ”).
• - Exact words spoken.
• - Example: He said, “I will go.”

• Indirect Speech:
• - Does not use quotation marks.
• - Changes pronouns, tenses, and sometimes
words.
Rules for Changing Direct to
Indirect Speech
• 1. Remove quotation marks.
• 2. Change pronouns as needed (e.g., I →
he/she).
• 3. Change tense (if reporting verb is in the
past).
• Example: Present → Past.
• 4. Adjust time expressions (e.g., now → then,
today → that day).
Examples
• 1. Direct Speech: She said, “I like ice cream.”
• Indirect Speech: She said that she liked ice
cream.

• 2. Direct Speech: He said, “I am reading.”


• Indirect Speech: He said that he was reading.
Practice Exercise
• Convert these sentences into indirect speech:
• 1. John said, “I will call you tomorrow.”
• 2. She said, “I am going to the market.”
