What is the ENVIRONMENTAL
DEGRADATION ?

Environmental degradation is the


destruction of the environment through
depletion of resources such as air, water
and soil; the destruction of ecosystems
and the extinction of wildlife. It is defined
as any change or disturbance to the
environment perceived to be destructive
or undesirable.
> Some causes of
environment degradation.
1.= Deforestation

2.= Climate change

3.= Soil Degradation

4.= Pollution

5.= Poverty
DEFORESTATION :-
Deforestation is the permanent destruction
of forests in order to make the land available
for other uses. It is one of the leading causes
of environmental degradation because it
reduces biodiversity, disturbs the water
cycle, and also cause climate change.
Trees play an important role in the water
cycle by absorbing water from the ground
and releasing it into atmosphere. Disturbing
it will cause droughts and floods.
Deforestation cause climate change by
releasing carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere . Deforestation can lead to soil
erosion which can lead land degradation
issues. All of these effects of deforestation
can have long-lasting impacts on the
environment which is DANGEROUS.
CLIMATE CHANGE:-
Climate change is a major factor of
environmental degradation because it also
cause soil erosion.It is the process of
removing upper land layer by the action of
natural forces such as wind, water etc.
Climate change is increasing the strength and
frequency of storms . This is damaging areas
that are affected by soil erosion due to their
topography or land use.
Climate change can also increase strength and
frequency of floods. Floods can carry away
large amounts of sediment, which is then
deposited some where which affect the
fertility of land . Climate change can cause
long termf drought, which results in
insufficient plant growth.
SOIL EROSION:-
Soil erosion can become serious danger for
environment , as it lead to decrease in soil
fertility it increase the sedimentation in water
bodies and also increase the risk of flood. Soil
erosion can lead to the loss of fertile topsoil
which is essential for plant growth
Soil erosion can lead to increased air
pollution, as the dust particles are carried
away by wind and deposited in other areas.
Soil erosion can lead to a decrease in
biodiversity, as it can reduce the amount of
habitat available for plants and animals. All of
these effects can have serious affect on the
environment
POVERTY:-
Poverty is also a cause to environmental
degradation. People live in poverty
experience hunger and food insecurity which
leads to over-exploitation of natural
resources. Eg.= trees are cut to turn into
charcoal, which is a product that can be sold
to get money. This lead to deforestation, air
pollution etc have a negative impact on the
environment.
People living in poverty may not have access
to education about environmental issues and
because of this lack of knowledge they
unknowingly do such activities which can
affect environment like burning wood for fuel
or dumping waste into rivers and streams.
These activities can have long-term negative
impacts on the environment, including air
and water pollution, soil erosion, and loss of
biodiversity.
CONTROLING ENVIRONMEENT
DEGRADATION:-

By planting more trees :-

Afforestation or planting of trees can help us


control environmental degradation. Plants
give us oxygen and take in carbon dioxide,
thereby reducing the amount of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere. The roots of the
plant hold onto the soil to prevent soil
erosion.
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle :-

The resources are limited and cannot


be renewed. Overusing them lead to
exhaustion. So, we need to reduce the
use and emission of greenhouse gases.
We can reuse the items and recycle
them. We can avoid plastic bags and
stick to jute bags. The cans can be
recycled.
By reducing the use of
chlorofluorocarbons :-

Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs such as


methane are known as greenhouse
gases. These gases trap heat in the
atmosphere and giving rise to global
warming. They deplete the ozone
layer due to which Ultraviolet rays
enter into atmosphere and cause
skin diseases .CFCs are widely used in
ACs and refrigerators. So it is
necessary to reduce their use. This
will reduce the global emission rate
and prevent drastic climate change.
Reduce fuel consumption :-

Using fuels in vehicles ,emit carbon


monoxides .So to reduce it we can
travel by bus and other means of
public transport or just use the
bicycle .Also, we can save energy by
electricity by switching them off
when not in use. We can use
renewable energies such as CNG,
solar energy, etc. They are found
amply in nature and are
inexhaustible
Treating the industrial waste :-

The waste produced by the industries is


toxic and causes pollution to the water
bodies.
To minimize the harmful effects of
industrial wastes , some methods such as
thermal techniques and chemical
techniques can be used to treat water
pollution.
METHODS –Ion exchange , Precipitation ,
Oxidation and reduction , Neutralization.
Reducing the use of fertilizers :-

Use of fertilizers causes soil


pollution. The use of fertilizers has
resulted in many health hazards
among humans. It also reduces
soil quality. We need to stop using
inorganic fertilizers. Organic
manures should be used.
Conserve the endangered
species :-

The ecosystem is balanced, and


every organism is related to each
other . The loss of one specie can
affect the cycle, causing a
disturbance in the environment.
Endangered species, such as the
one-horned rhino, needs to be
conserve before they get extinct
and affect the ecosystem.
Poaching and hunting should be
avoided.
-Identify the endangered species.
--Protect them so that they can
increase their population.
CONCLUSION
So the conclusion of whole
project is ENVIRONMENT
DEGRADATION is really a serious
issue and we have to be serious
about this . We have to make
people aware of this problem
because by depleting our
environment and resources , we
are snatching our upcoming
generations future. Awaring
people about this and self
understanding will play a major
roll to reduce it.
