Types of Memory

Secondary memory, or secondary storage, is used for long-term data retention and includes devices like hard disk drives (HDDs), solid state drives (SSDs), compact discs (CDs), and USB flash drives. Each type has distinct characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages, such as HDDs offering high capacity at low cost but slower speeds, while SSDs provide faster access but at a higher price. Other forms include Blu-ray discs, which can store high-definition video and data, and portable flash memory, known for its compact size and durability.

Types of Memory

SECONDARY MEMORY
DEFINITION

 Secondary memory, also known as secondary storage, is used to store data

long-term. Unlike primary memory (RAM), which is volatile and loses data
when the power is off, secondary memory retains data even when the
computer is turned off.
 Examples of secondary memory include hard disk drives (HDDs), solid state
drives (SSDs), optional discs (CDs, DVDs), and USB flash drives.
TYPES OF SECONDARY STORAGE

 HARD DISK DRIVES

I. The hard disk memories store information on one or more circular
platters (or disks) that are continuously spinning. These rotating disks
are coated with magnetic material and staked with space between
them. Information is recorded on the surface of rotating disks by
magnetic heads as tiny magnet spots.
II. The hard disks have storage capacity measured in giga byte and terra
bytes.
III. Advantages: High storage capacity, relatively low cost.
IV. Disadvantages: Slower access speed compared to SSDs, mechanical
parts can wear out.
 COMPACT DISKS (CDs and DVDs) :

I. The compact disks are optical media, which use lasers to store
information. The CDs are relatively cheap have a storage capacity of
upto 700Mb.
II. DVD is an potical storage device that looks the same as a CDs but able
to hold about 15 times as much information and transfer it to computer
about 20 times as fast as a CD-ROM. A DVD also called a SUPER
DENSITY DISK (SD), can upto hold 17 gigabytes of data.
 SOLID STATE DRIVES (SSDS):

I. Solid-state drives are used nowadays in the place of hard disks. It uses
flash-based memory, which is significantly faster than older hard disk
storage technologies and has a RAM-like working mechanism.
II. Components: NAND flash memory, no moving parts.
III. Advantages: Faster access speed, more durable, less power
consumption.
IV. Disadvantages: Higher cost per gigabyte compared to HDDs, limited
write cycles.
 PORTABLE FLASH MEMORY :

I. Portable flash memory is also known as Pen drives. A flash drive is a

small, ultra-portable storage device with a ‘solid state’ memory i.e., it
has no moving parts unlike magnetic storage devices, nor does it make
use of lasers.
II. It works similar to RAM. The key difference is that data is retained in
flash memory even when the power is switched off. Typical sizes range
from 4 GB up to 128 GB and beyond.
 BLU RAY DISK :

I. Blu-ray disk also known as Blu-ray. It is an optical disc storage media

format. Its main uses are high-definition video and data storage. The
disk has the same dimensions as a DVD or CD.
II. While the current technologies use a red laser to read or write data, the
new ones use a blue-violet laser. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser
is it has a shorter wavelength, which makes it possible to focus the
laser spot with greater precision.
III. It can fit the same size of data as a DVD/CD.
IV. Blu-ray disks are capable of storing up to 128 GB of data.
