REDUCTION
Changes in
matter
may they be physical or chemical
affects our lives.
• These changes can be beneficial or
harmful to living things and the
environment
• knowing the physical and chemical
changes that materials undergo help
us determine the best way to manage
materials and minimize waste
• thus, preventing environmental
problems to aggravate
management
of waste
Consider the following in
managing your waste:
• In discarding cans, you
can either crush them or
retain their original state
2. To prevent rusting, paint
the metal to coat its surface
so it would not react with
oxygen
3. Rotten or spoiled food, as
well as fruit and vegetable
peelings and other food
scraps, can be used for
composting
• recognize useful and harmful materials
• Using reusable
bags when
shopping or
going to the
grocery store;
2. Using reusable
containers when
packing, storing
food or drinks, and
even when buying
drinks;
3. Rethink first and consider
the properties of materials
and try to find other uses for
it in some instances.
For example,
empty medicine bottles may
be sold to junkshops or small
retailers that need small
containers for packaging.
4. Avoid buying
new materials
when you still
have supplies
that can be used.
5. Donating clothes and
other useful materials to
some organizations that
conduct relief operations
during calamities; and
6. Conducting a
rummage sale,
not just of clothes
but of other items
that are still
functional.
recycle
• To create a new
product out of a
material that has
already served its
purpose.
- Recycling is different from
reusing
Recycling – produce a
material out of discarded
ones while reusing uses the
same material over and over
again
For example,
• Glass bottles can be reused to
contain liquids for a couple of times
• When glass bottles become stained
due to prolonged usage, these can
be converted to a new product like
bottle chimes or paper weight.
• Recycling prevents wastage of a
material that can actually be useful for a
different purpose
• Reduces the use of raw materials
For example,
To make a fresh paper, a tree has to be cut,
but by recycling old newspaper to make
writing paper, no tree needs to be cut
anymore
• Recycling also provides a source of
income to families
recove
It is important to get
r
rid of the trash
accumulated over
time. One way of
doing so is to recover
the energy that comes
from the trash itself.
How can we recover
energy from a waste?
• Incineration
technology
- involves burning of
piles of garbage in a
huge incinerator to
produce heat and
electricity
How can we recover energy
from a waste?
• Segregation
- garbage are segregated in
a Materials Recovery Facility
(MCF)
- To recover recyclables and
biodegradable materials
that can be used as compost
ingredients
repair
• To fix slightly
broken things to
make them useful
again.
• Repairable
materials include
furniture,
appliances, and
clothes
• Instead of discarding broken or busted
materials, they can be checked if they are
still repairable
• If they are, then they should be repaired
instead of buying new materials
