Body Language
Non-verbal Communication
 ‘The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said’

 Communication – Verbal & Non Verbal (Inseparable)

 N-V. A smile, a nod, the way we sit, stand, facial expression, gesture, posture, touch,

distance, clothes.

 Reveal the personality and mental state of the person.

 Some cases – it is culture specific ( U.S & Japan)

 Different types of Greeting -----


 Different types of non-verbal communication, including Kinesics, Proxemics, and
Paralanguage etc.
 1.Kinesics (Body Language)
 Ray Birdwhistell, - coined the word ‘Kinesics’ as ‘The systematic study of the
visually sensible aspects of non-verbal communication’.
 Merriam Webster dictionary defines ‘Kinesics’ as ‘A systematic study of the
relationship between non-linguistic body motion and communication’.
 A communication - conveyed without using words or language.
 Various parts of the body contributes in the process of communication.
 Emotion of anger, love, respect, hate etc. through facial expression and body
movement.
 Kinesics -
1. Facial expression
2. Personal appearance
3. Body Postures
4. Gestures
(1)Facial Expression
 Face and Eyes - highly expressive of inner emotions and feelings

 Facial expression - eye movement and eye contact

 Looking directly in the eyes of listener shows honesty and confidence

 Stealing the eyes contact displays guilt and lack of confidence

 F.E. – gives better idea about someone mental state. (Psychological Condition)

 Emotions & Feelings – willingly or unwillingly .

 W/o Words – Feeling of Sadness, happiness, anger


(2)Personal Appearance

 Person’s outer appearance - first impression.


 Speaker is looked at before he has been listened.
 Positive or negative image of a speaker in their mind before listening to him.
 A person in a shabby dress .
 On the other hand, the first impression of a nicely dressed person would be quite
good.
 Personal appearance includes clothes, hair, jewelry, cosmetics etc.
 The selection of clothes must be done according to the occasion.
 In profession, unshaved face and indecent clothes can be offending.
 One cannot go to office in the dress he wears when he attends a marriage function
or birthday party.
 One’s personal appearance should match his profession or work.
 Casual and awkward appearance will give an impression that he is rough and
careless person; and may not take the business seriously.
(3)Body Postures

 Movement of body - one’s intellectual and emotional state.


 Generally internal state of mind can be well displayed by the body postures.
 Confidence or lack of confidence, interest or indifference, like or dislikes etc.
 A trained or experienced speaker - body consciously.
 Assumptions - body postures & their meanings.
 An aggressive and fast movement - person’s angry state of mind.
 Fast body movement and lack of patience may be interpreted as insincerity and
immaturity. It also shows one’s lack of concentration.
 Loose walk with dragging feet might be interpreted as a sign of weakness tiredness or
sickness.
 The firm steps and straight body would show that the person is confident and full of
interest. This may help in gaining trust of others.
 Standing with the support of chair or table with crossed arms and drooping head will be
interpreted as the sign of guilt or lack of confidence or lack of interest.
 Sitting curved in the chair during a business meeting will not be deemed positively.
 Generally, a person in very conscious about his body postures on his work place,
whereas at home, he remains very causal.
(4)Gestures
 Besides face expression and position of eyes, the movement of other body parts also
conveyed some meaning.
 The movement of hands, fingers, arms, legs, head etc. is referred to as gestures.
 Movement of body should be in harmony with the speech.
 One cannot nod the head from up and down and say ‘No’ as gesture and word
contradict each other.
 Keeping one’s religion or culture tradition and situation in mind, we can understand his
gestures in a better way.

Pounding fist on desk Anger


Aggressively talking Accusing or threatening
Waving leg while sitting on a chair Happy or tension free state of mind
Thumps down Rejection or defeat
Joining both the palms Showing respect or welcome
Covering mouth or rubbing eyes Shows doubt or telling lie
Putting object in the mouth Pressure and lack of confidence
