Unit 1
Introduction to offshore oil and gas operations
• The term offshore means off the coast.
• In oil and gas extraction, offshore refers to the development of oil fields and natural gas deposits under the
ocean.
Three streams of oil industry
• Upstream- oil and gas exploration and production;
• Midstream-transportation and storage; and
• Downstream- refining and marketing.
Two types Seaward Licences
Exploration Licences: non-exclusive, permit the holder to conduct nonintrusive surveys seismic or gravity and
magnetic data acquisition
Production licences: grant exclusive rights to holders “to search and bore for, and get, petroleum”, in the area of
the licence covering a specified block or blocks
Exploration
• Magnetic survey- variation in intensity of magnetic field
• Gravimetric survey- small variation in gravitational field
• Seismic survey - Acoustic waves to create images of the earth through analysis of vibrations from those
waves.
• survey vessel for the purpose of pinpointing
• To locate possible area for drilling oil in middle of the oceans
• Marine seismic survey
• use sound energy to map geological structures under the seabed.
• These sound waves bounce back to the ocean surface where receivers, called hydrophones, record the
strength and return time of each sound wave.
Types
• 2D seismic
• 3D seismic survey
Advantage of 2D : Quik and inexpensive
Disadvantage of 2D: Data not accurate
Drilling
Types of drilling rig
• Jack ups,
• semisubmersibles and
• Drill ships
Conditions to be checked before drilling
• The weather and current conditions
• seasonal environmental conditions and
• licence conditions
• availability of rigs
• commitments made to government
• other company internal constraints and objectives
Exploration drilling activity in deep water Typical deep-sea drilling
Drilling
• Relatively simple process.
• A potential reservoir located deep beneath the earth's surface.
• In order to gain access and extract oil or gas, a hole must be drilled through the
various rocks, materials and layers to reach it.
Common Drilling Methods
• Percussion or Cable Drilling.
• Rotary Drilling.
• Dual-Wall Reverse-Circulation Drilling.
• Electro-Drilling.
• Directional Drilling.
Types of drilling
Jackuprig
• Mobile type,
• self-elevating drilling and
• workover platforms equipped with legs that can be lowered to the ocean floor until
a foundation is established to support the hull, which contains the drilling workover
equipment, jacking system, crew quarters, loading and unloading facilities, storage areas
Uses
• Exploratory drilling platforms and offshore and wind farm service platforms.
• The most popular and numerous of various mobile types of rigs in existence.
Semisubmersible rig
• water depths greater than 400 ft
• Semi-submersible rigs are buoyant and,
• unlike jack-up rigs which rest on the seabed, float during drilling operations.
Advantage:
• Good ship stability and
• seakeeping,
• better than drill ships.
